Dont Dog Me
The Drifters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I said, ""I needed you""
You said, ""You would always stay""
It wasn't me who changed, but you
And now you've gone away

Don't you see that now you've gone
And I'm left here on my own
Tthat I have to follow you
And beg you to come home

You don't have to say you love me
Just be close at hand
You don't have to stay forever
I will understand
Believe me
Believe me
I can't help but love you
But believe me
I'll never tie you down

Left alone with just a memory
Life seems dead and so unreal
All that's left is loneliness
There's nothing left to feel

You don't have to say you love me
Just be close at hand
You don't have to stay forever
I will understand
Believe me
Believe me

You don't have to say you love me
Just be close at hand
You don't have to stay forever
I will understand
Believe me
Believe me
Believe me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Drifters' song "Don't Dog Me" convey the feelings of heartbreak and abandonment. The singer is speaking to a former lover, pleading for them to come back, even if they don't love them the way they used to. The opening line, "When I said, 'I needed you'," sets the tone for the rest of the song, highlighting the singer's vulnerability and need for their partner's affection. However, they find themselves in a position where the love has disappeared and they are left alone with only memories and loneliness.

The singer tries to convince their former partner that they don't need their love to flourish, and all that they ask is for the person to be present in their lives. This plea is evident in the lines, "You don't have to say you love me/ Just be close at hand/ You don't have to stay forever/ I will understand." The singer still loves their former partner deeply, but they also realize that they can't force love and hold them back from living their life. The phrase "Believe me" is repeated throughout the song, indicating the earnestness of the singer's words.

Overall, "Don't Dog Me" is a poignant song that speaks to the universal experience of unrequited love and the pain of letting someone go, while still yearning for their presence in your life.

I think the line ‘Until I let you go, is actually ‘Until he lets you go’ which implies that she is possibly married to someone else. This would make sense about why the singer and her have to keep their relationship secret. That’s how I’ve always viewed this great song
