Follow Me
The Drifters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I′m getting tired of doing nothing
Wasting time
I know there's got to be a new place
I can find, yeah

Somewhere I′ll be free and satisfied
But, baby, I will need you by my side
Oh, can't you hear me calling you
Calling you, Calling you

Follow me, yeah (follow me)
I've two arms as strong
As iron holding you (do do do)
And with these arms, I wanna
Do things, yes, I do

I wanna be a someone in this town
But someone′s always
Trying to put me down
Oh, can′t you hear me calling you
Calling you, calling you

Follow me (follow me, follow me)
I've got somewhere to go
(Follow me) we′ll be
Happy there, I know

We'll dance and sing, everything
We′ll have a good time together
Just you wait and see

We gotta pack our bags and
Leave here right away (do do do)
If we don't catch the next bus, baby
We might stay, yeah

And that would be the
End of me, I know (yeah)
So, come on, baby
Grab your things, let′s go
Oh, can't you hear me calling you
Calling you, calling you

Follow me, yeah (follow me)
Follow me (follow me)
Oh, can't you hear me calling you
Calling you, calling you

Follow me (follow me)
Oh, you got to follow me...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Drifters' song "Follow Me" convey a sense of restlessness and frustration with the current state of the singer's life. The opening lines express a weariness with idleness and a desire to find a new place where they can be free and satisfied. However, they emphasize that they need their partner by their side throughout this journey.

The chorus urges the listener to follow the singer, promising them strong support and a commitment to do things together. The desire to become someone in this town is mentioned, but the singer acknowledges that there are always people trying to bring them down. Despite this, the plea to be heard and supported by their partner remains.

The second verse continues this theme of needing to leave their current situation and start fresh somewhere else. The urgency to pack their bags and catch the next bus is emphasized, as they fear that staying would result in the end of their dreams. The encouragement to the partner to gather their things and join them is repeated, as the singer emphasizes their longing to be followed and supported.

Overall, the lyrics of "Follow Me" express a longing for change, a desire for a better life, and a plea for their partner's support and presence throughout their journey.

On this day in 1965 {June 28th} the New York City disc jockey Murray the K's television special, 'It's What's Happening, Baby!', was aired on the CBS-TV network...
One of the eighteen acts to appear on the show were the Drifters; at the time the group's "Follow Me" was in its first week on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #98, the following week was at #96, and then on its third and final week on the chart it peaked at #91...
Between 1954 and 1966 the group had thirty-six Top 100 records; four made the Top 10 with one reaching #1, "Save the Last Dance for Me" for three weeks in 1960...
They just missed having a second #1 record when "There Goes My Baby" peaked at #2* {for 1 week} in 1959...
* The week that “There Goes My Baby” peaked at #2, the #1 record for that week was “A Big Hunk O’ Love" by Elvis Presley...
