I Can Help
The Drifters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you've got a problem, I don't care what it is
If you need a hand, I can assure you this
I can help, I've got two strong arms, I can help
It would sure do me good to do you good
Let me help

It's a fact that people get lonely, ain't nothing new
But a woman like you, baby, should never have the blues
Let me help, I've got two for me, let me help
It would sure do me good to do you good
Let me help

When I go to sleep at night, you're always a part of my dream
Holding me tight and telling me everything I want to hear
Don't forget me, baby, all you gotta do is call
You know how I feel about you, if I can do anything at all
Let me help, if your child needs a daddy, I can help
It would sure do me good to do you good, let me help

When I go to sleep at night, you're always a part of my dream
Holding me tight and telling me everything I want to hear
Don't forget me, baby, all you gotta do is call

You know how I feel about you, if I can do anything at all
Let me help, if your child needs a daddy, I can help

The second verse addresses the issue of loneliness, and the singer focuses on a woman who should not feel that way. The chorus repeats that the singer wants to help because it would make them feel good, and they encourage the person to reach out to them.

The third verse demonstrates the depth of the connection between the singer and the person they are offering to help. The singer considers this person every night in their dreams, imagining holding them and saying everything they want to hear. They make it clear in the final line that if there is anything the person needs, they should let the singer know.

I think the line ‘Until I let you go, is actually ‘Until he lets you go’ which implies that she is possibly married to someone else. This would make sense about why the singer and her have to keep their relationship secret. That’s how I’ve always viewed this great song
