I REMEMBER CHRISTMAS
The Drifters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll be home for Christmas;
You can count on me.
Please have snow and mistletoe
And presents on the tree.

Christmas Eve will find me
Where the love-light gleams.
I'll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams.

I'll be home for Christmas
If only in my dreams.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The Drifters' classic Christmas song "I Remember Christmas" convey a deep sense of longing and desire for the holiday season spent with loved ones. The lyrics center on a person who is not able to be with their loved ones during the festive season but hopes to be able to connect with them, even if only in their dreams.

The opening lines of the song, "I'll be home for Christmas; You can count on me" convey the singer's commitment to making an effort to connect with their loved ones during the holiday season. The second line, "Please have snow and mistletoe and presents on the tree," conveys a longing for the traditional trappings of Christmas like snow, mistletoe, and presents under the tree. The third and fourth lines tie this sense of longing and desire back to the sense of connection with loved ones: "Christmas Eve will find me where the love-light gleams."

The song concludes on a wistful note with the line, "I'll be home for Christmas if only in my dreams." This line captures both the singer's deep longing to connect with loved ones and the sadness of not being able to do so in reality. Overall, "I Remember Christmas" is a poignant and heartfelt tribute to the importance of family and connection during the holiday season.

It is funny, I can remember all our Christmases from being very young in the late 40's onwards. Cutting strips for hoops to make trimmings. Roaring fire in the fireplace. Our dog keeping guard of the chocolates and growling if we tried to get to them. Our children coming down at 5 am in the morning to see if Santa had been. Thank goodness my late husband took thousands of photos which I can now look back on and re-live those days. I wish my mum and dad had had a camera in the 40's and 50's as I have only a handful of photos of us as a family, but they were taken by an uncle who died many years ago.

FORGET CHRISTMAS?
Many Christians do not celebrate Christmas! Hard to believe for those who didn’t know but here are the reasons why:
1 Jesus didn’t ask us to
2 The first Christian Church did not
3 It is not the actual date
4 The date was set from pagan practices.
Good reasons. Should we then forget Christmas? I don’t believe it would have survived this long if Jesus didn’t want it, being as bad as some say it is. Do we forget the greatest birthday ever? I want to remember, commemorate, and celebrate like the angels, Mary, Wise Men, and shepherds did, that first Christmas.
