I Who Have Nothing
The Drifters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I, I who have nothing
I, I who have no one
Adore you and want you so
I'm just a no one with nothing to give you but, oh
I love you

He, he buys you diamonds
Bright, sparkling diamonds
But, believe me, dear, when I say
That he can give you the world but he'll never love the way
I love you

He can take you any place he wants
To fancy clubs and restaurants
But I can only watch you with
My nose pressed up against the window pane

I, I who have nothing
I, I who have no one
Must watch you go dancing by
Wrapped in the arms of somebody else when, darling, it's I
Who loves you

I love you

I love you
I love you

Overall Meaning

The song "I Who Have Nothing" by The Drifters explores the theme of unrequited love and the perspective of someone who feels inadequate and powerless in comparison to a wealthy suitor. The singer of the song is expressing their deep affection for someone who they believe is out of their league. They describe themselves as having nothing to offer, yet they adore the person they love. The repetition of "I, I who have nothing" emphasizes their feelings of insignificance and lack of material possessions.

The lyrics contrast the extravagant gifts that the other person's current partner can provide. They acknowledge that the suitor can offer the world, including diamonds, fancy clubs, and restaurants, but the singer firmly believes that their love will never be matched. The phrase "he'll never love the way I love you" highlights the depth and intensity of their emotions, suggesting that true love cannot be bought or measured by material wealth.

Despite their feelings, the singer is resigned to watch the person they love dance with another in the arms of somebody else. The final repetition of "I love you" is a heartfelt plea, a final affirmation of their love and desire for the person's happiness, even if it is not with them.

I think the line ‘Until I let you go, is actually ‘Until he lets you go’ which implies that she is possibly married to someone else. This would make sense about why the singer and her have to keep their relationship secret. That’s how I’ve always viewed this great song
