In the Still of the Night
The Drifters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the still of the night
As I gaze out of my window
At the moon in it's flight
My thoughts all stray, stray to you

In the still of the night
While the world lies in slumber
Oh the times without number
When I say to you

Do you love me
Just like I love you
Are you my life to be
That dream come true
Or will this dream of mine
Will it fade way out of sight

Just like that moon growing dim

Way out on the rim of the hill
In the still of the night

Overall Meaning

The Drifters' song, "In the Still of the Night," is a poignant ode to longing and love, evoking the loneliness and vulnerability that can come with yearning for someone. The song begins with the singer gazing out their window at the moon and thinking of the person they love. As the world sleeps, their thoughts turn to the object of their affection, wondering if they feel the same way. The chorus of the song poses the question directly: "Do you love me/Just like I love you/Are you my life to be/That dream come true/Or will this dream of mine/Will it fade way out of sight."

The metaphor of the moon is an important one in this song, representing the shifting nature of love and the passage of time. The singer fears that their dreams and desires will fade away, like the moon growing dim "way out on the rim of the hill." The song's arrangement, featuring lush harmonies and a gentle melody, reinforces this dreamy, almost otherworldly quality, as if the singer's love is a fragile, fleeting thing that they are desperate to hold onto.

Moreover, the repetition of the phrase "in the still of the night" is significant as well, suggesting that the singer feels most vulnerable and exposed during these quiet, intimate moments. The silence amplifies their feelings and makes them feel all the more intense. Overall, "In the Still of the Night" is a timeless classic, one that draws on universal emotions to create a haunting and beautiful portrait of love and longing.

When my family would take long trips, the oldies station was the only thing we could all agree to listen to. Now, the "oldies" are all from the '80s and '90s. I miss the good ol' days!
