Kissing In The Back Row Of The Movies
The Drifters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Your mama says that through the week
You can't go out with me
But when the weekend comes around
She knows where we will be

Kissin' in the back row
Of the movies on a Saturday night with you
Holdin' hands together, you and I
Holdin' hands together

Smoochin' in the back row
Of the movies on a Saturday night with you
We could stay forever, you and I
We could stay forever, you and I
Huggin' and a kissin' in the back row of the movies

Every night, I pick you up from school
Cause you're my steady date
But Monday to the Friday night
I leave you at the gate, yeah

You know, we can't have too much fun
'Til all your homework's done
But when the weekend comes
She knows where we will be, oh

Kissin' in the back row
Of the movies on a Saturday night with you
Holdin' hands together, you and I
Holdin' hands together, baby

Smoochin' in the back row
Of the movies on a Saturday night with you
We could stay forever, you and I
We could stay forever, you and I
Huggin' and a kissin' in the back row of the movies

Oh, I sit at home at night and watch TV
I still think of you
But Monday to the Friday night
We share a joke of two, yeah

You know, they don't knock on my door
At the Friday night for sure
But when the weekend comes
She knows where we will be, yeah

Kissin' in the back row
Of the movies on a Saturday night with you
Holdin' hands together, you and I
Holdin' hands together, baby

Smoochin' in the back row
Of the movies on a Saturday night with you, yeah
We could stay forever, you and I
We could stay forever, you and I
Huggin' and a kissin' in the back row of the movies, yeah

Kissin' in the back row
Of the movies on a Saturday night with you
Holdin' hands together, you and I
Holdin' hands together, baby

Smoochin' in the back row
Of the movies on a Saturday night with you
Where we could stay forever, you and I

Overall Meaning

The song "Kissin' in the Back Row of the Movies" by The Drifters is a fun and light-hearted tune about sneaking around with your lover and stealing moments of affection in the back row of a movie theatre. The lyrics talk about the restrictions placed by one's parents, who might not allow them to go out during the week, but can't keep them from enjoying their time together on the weekends. The chorus speaks of the blissful moments spent in the back row of the cinema, with the lovers holding hands, smooching, and hugging while watching the movie. The song presents the millennial concept of "Netflix and Chill" and how young couples used to steal affection when they didn't have the privacy of their own homes or rooms.

The lyrics of the song are relatable to many people who might have gone through similar situations in their teenage years where they had to be sneaky and clandestine about their romantic encounters. The upbeat, bright melody of the song adds to the playful nature of the lyrics, making it an immensely enjoyable one to sing and dance along.

Can't beat The Drifters. I'm 50 and these remind me of every Sunday my parents would put the LP on. Great music. Good times. Today's music never beat it

Johnny Moore joined The Drifters back in the fifties and became lead singer in early sixties and got better with age! In watching the videos that were made over in England he really seemed to enjoy singing! Sure made and makes my life a little brighter! Love to hear him sing!!❤
