Like Sister And Brother
The Drifters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's such a small town girl, news travels faster than a sigh,
Everybody wants to know about the next man's secret, so everytime we meet upon the street, we've got to keep it....

Like sister and brother we'll wave to each other, we don't want all the world to know, we are really lovers
So we'll talk about the weather 'til we're alone together
And all the world will fade and die, and baby there is only you and I

You and me baby, you and me baby.

Sometimes it's hard to hide pent up emotions we both feel,
I want to tell the world I love you, but I dare not say it..
Until I let you go there's only one way we can play it...

Like sister and brother, we'll wave to each other, we don't want all the world to know, we are really lovers
So we'll talk about the weather 'til we're alone together,
And all the world will fade and die, and baby there is only you and I.

Like sister and brother We'll wave to each other, we don't want all the world to know, (2x)

We are really lovers so we'll talk about the weather 'til we're alone together and all the world will fade and die, and baby there is only you and I.

Like sister and brother We'll wave to each other, we don't want all the world to know....(fade)

Overall Meaning

The Drifters' "Like Sister And Brother" is a love song about a couple who are desperate to keep their relationship under wraps. The song's title is used to convey the strong bond and familial love shared between the couple, who choose to greet each other like siblings do in public, despite being lovers in reality.

The opening lines describe the challenges of living in a small town, where gossip and hearsay travel faster than a sigh. The couple knows that the world is eager to know their secret, and they must be cautious when they meet in public. The chorus talks about how they wave at each other as if they were siblings, to avoid arousing any suspicions or curiosity in others.

The second verse delves deeper into the couple's emotions, describing how they feel pent-up emotions for each other, but they fear being shunned or criticized by society. They are so afraid of the consequences of expressing their love, that they use caution and restraint, waiting for the day they can be openly expressive of their feelings.

Overall, "Like Sister And Brother" is a poignant and emotional song about a couple's secret love affair, which they must hide from the world. It's a heartfelt plea for understanding and acceptance, set to a catchy tune by The Drifters.

Everybody wants to know about the next man's secret, so everytime we meet upon the street, we've got to keep it...
People around here are nosy and curious, always wanting to know about other people's business, so when we see each other in public, we have to be discreet and keep our relationship a secret.

Like sister and brother we'll wave to each other, we don't want all the world to know, we are really lovers

So we'll talk about the weather 'til we're alone together
When we do get a chance to be alone together, we avoid talking about anything that might give away the fact that we're more than just friends. We stick to safe topics like the weather.

And all the world will fade and die, and baby there is only you and I
When we're together, nothing else matters. We're so focused on each other that the rest of the world fades away, and it's just the two of us.

We both have strong feelings for each other, but it's difficult to keep them hidden all the time.

I want to tell the world I love you, but I dare not say it..
As much as I want to shout my love for you from the rooftops, I know that we have to keep our relationship a secret, so I can't say the words out loud.

Until I let you go there's only one way we can play it...
Until we're in a place where we can be open about our relationship, the only way we can keep it going is by acting like we're just friends, like siblings.

Like sister and brother, we'll wave to each other, we don't want all the world to know, we are really lovers
We continue to pretend that we're just siblings when we're around other people, because we don't want anyone to find out that we're in love.

So we'll talk about the weather 'til we're alone together,
Talking about the weather is a safe topic for us, and we only really feel comfortable discussing our true feelings when we're alone together.

And all the world will fade and die, and baby there is only you and I.
Our connection is so strong that everything else becomes irrelevant when we're together. It's just the two of us, and nothing else matters.

Like sister and brother We'll wave to each other, we don't want all the world to know, (2x)
Again, we pretend to be just siblings when we're in public, because we don't want anyone to find out about our relationship.

We are really lovers so we'll talk about the weather 'til we're alone together and all the world will fade and die, and baby there is only you and I.
Despite the fact that we have to keep our relationship a secret, we know that we're in love, and when we're able to be alone together, nothing else matters but our connection.

Like sister and brother We'll wave to each other, we don't want all the world to know....(fade)
As the song fades out, we're left with the idea that we'll continue to pretend to be just siblings so that our love can continue in secret, at least for now.

Roger Cook wrote this one for the Drifters what a beautiful ageless Classic. I am proud to say I lived through an era of the best music ever.

Dear Roger i think barry white says this sing year 1973 or 1974 i was listening what do you say

@TonyWeaving

I agree Paul my friend. I was only a child when this song came out. Aged about 9 in 1972. But I am really proud to say I lived through the very BEST era for music. Unlike the rubbish around today. It has all been done in the 50s 60,s and 70s and they have no idea how to make a brilliant record today that will last for decades and decades to come. Tony in Portsmouth England.

I loved this from the moment I first heard this fabulous song in ‘73 when I was a young kid of 14 years old - I feel so glad to have grown up listening to such beautifully emotional music as was produced in those years.

@sleepingbear1889

Me as well, always one of my favourite groups 🎉

@collinplace

No miming, no autotune, just pure talent unlike some of today's 'singers'.

@SvendBosanvovski

That's Bill Fredericks leading the vocals. He left The Drifters in 1974 to go solo . He had such a beautiful tone. Sadly died in 1999

@lotuselise140
