Come, they told me pa-rum pum pum pum
Our newborn King to see, pa-rum pum pum pum
Our finest gifts we bring pa-rum pum pum pum
To lay before the King pa-rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum. rum pum pum pum
So to honor Him pa-rum pum pum pum
When we come
Little Baby pa-rum pum pum pum
I am a poor boy too, pa-rum pum pum pum
I have no gift to bring pa-rum pum pum pum
That's fit to give our King pa- rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum
Shall I play for you, pa-rum pum pum pum
on my drum?

Mary nodded pa-rum pum pum pum
The Ox and Lamb kept time pa-rum pum pum pum
I played my drum for Him pa-rum pum pum pum
I played my best for Him pa -rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum

Then He smiled at me pa-rum pum pum pum
Me and my drum

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Little Drummer Boy" talks about a young, poor boy who has nothing to give to the newborn King, but his intellectual and spiritual talent. The first verse speaks of the singer being called to visit the newborn King with the wise men or Magi, and the second verse, in which the boy proposes to play his drum for the infant, a gesture of praise, is against the backdrop of his own poverty. He recognizes his status in society as a pauper, just like Jesus. The third verse reveals that the Baby Jesus accepts the boy's present and responds with a beautiful smile, which makes the musician happy.

The melody of the song follows the early Christian religious music format, known as plainchant, which employs a single melodic line. The orchestration in the hit version of "Little Drummer Boy" by The Drifters recorded in 1958 increases to a gradual crescendo, rising in tempo and dynamics in the chorus.

I think the line ‘Until I let you go, is actually ‘Until he lets you go’ which implies that she is possibly married to someone else. This would make sense about why the singer and her have to keep their relationship secret. That’s how I’ve always viewed this great song
