Living Doll
The Drifters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Got myself a crying, talking, sleeping, walking, living doll
Got to do my best to please her, just 'cause she's a living doll
Got a roving eye and that is why she satisfies my soul
Got the one and only walking, talking, living doll

Well, take a look at her hair, it's real
And if you don't believe what I say, just feel
I'm gonna lock her up in a trunk
So no big hunk can steal her away from me

Got myself a crying, talking, sleeping, walking, living doll
Got to do my best to please her, just 'cause she's a living doll
Got a roving eye and that is why she satisfies my soul
Got the one and only walking, talking, living doll

Well, take a look at her hair, it's real
And if you don't believe what I say, just feel
Gonna lock her up in a trunk
So no big hunk can steal her away from me

Got myself a crying, talking, sleeping, walking, living doll
Got to do my best to please her, just 'cause she's a living doll

Got a roving eye and that is why she satisfies my soul
Got the one and only walking, talking, living doll

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Living Doll" by The Drifters depict a person who is metaphorically referring to their romantic partner as a "living doll." The use of terms like "crying, talking, sleeping, walking" suggests that the individual sees their partner as a multi-dimensional and dynamic being, emphasizing that she is more than just an object or possession. The singer feels the need to constantly please her, highlighting a sense of devotion and perhaps an awareness of how important it is to nurture the relationship.

The line "Got a roving eye and that is why she satisfies my soul" could suggest a conflict within the singer, hinting at a wandering gaze towards other potential partners while recognizing that their current partner is the one who truly fulfills them. This internal struggle adds depth to the relationship dynamic portrayed in the song, showcasing the complexity of human emotions and desires.

The repeated emphasis on the partner being a "living doll" conveys a sense of possession and obsession. The reference to locking her up in a trunk to prevent anyone else from taking her away can be viewed as a metaphor for the singer's fear of losing their partner, highlighting a sense of insecurity and possessiveness. This possessive nature could stem from a deep-seated fear of abandonment or a desire to control the relationship dynamics.

Overall, the lyrics of "Living Doll" delve into themes of love, possession, and the complexities of relationships. The singer's portrayal of their partner as a multifaceted individual reflects a deep emotional connection, while also hinting at underlying insecurities and struggles within the relationship. The juxtaposition of admiration and possessiveness creates a rich narrative that explores the intricacies of human connections and the lengths one might go to in order to hold onto what they cherish.

I was 15 and just left school to start out on my working life. One very young boy in a factory full of women and girls. My engineering training was full of distractions but this song by Cliff stamped the year 1959 indelibly on my heart. Whenever I hear 'Living Doll' my memory goes back to those sunny days.

I was 14 but remember 1959 so well a lovely hot summer I spent camping with my mates and this great song playing on the radio. Along with 'Here comes Summer' the standout song of the year.

This song when it came out, was one of the favorites to everyone. At that time, I came to know a lovely German girl from Belgium. Her name was Karen Vyslouzil. She was so cute and beautiful and we managed to spend some wonderful times together. Up till today, I can still remember her fondly!

Cliff and the Shadows have influenced me all my 63 years of age.
I was hypnotised by " Living Doll " Travellin' light and other stunning songs at the age of 13...it was Hank's "Apache "which made me learn the guitar at the age of 13...and I still play it...but the classic Shadows tone of the Fender Stratocaster...the Hank Marvin tone ... still is as elusive as ever !!!!
The greatest group of all time along with the Beatles.

I was 12 years old in 1959 when this record came out. It is still the very best of music, even over a half a century later. We of that era had the very best of times, as we experienced the advent of the Rock and Roll era, Cliff, Elvis, Beatles, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, Roy Orbiston, Freddie and the Dreamers, The Animals, The Searchers, The Seekers, Herman's Hermits, etc. etc. etc. Ad Infininitum. I feel sorry for the youth of today as it is not as exciting as the sixtie's era.

@willymueller3278

You got it all right and I am one year older !

@gloriagarcia4351

Very aptly said. They're really the frontrunners of the 60s music, love them all.
