Me and Bobby McGee
The Drifters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Busted flat in Baton Rouge
Waitin' for the train
Feelin' nearly faded as my jeans
Bobby thumbed a diesel down
Just before it rained
Rode us all the way to New Orleans
I pulled my harpoon out of my dirty red bandanna
And was playing soft
While Bobby sang the blues
With them windshield wipers slappin' time
I was holdin' Bobby's hand in mine
We sang every song that driver knew
Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose
Nothin' ain't worth nothin' but it's free

Feelin' good was easy, Lord,
When he sang the blues
And feelin' good was good enough for me
Good enough for me and Bobby McGee

From Kentucky coal mines
To the California sun
Bobby shared the secrets of my soul
Through all kinds of weather, Lord
Through everything I done
Bobby baby kept me from the cold
Then somewhere near Salinas, Lord
I let him slip away
Lookin' for the home I hope he'll find it
And I'd trade all of my tomorrows
For one single yesterday
Holdin' Bobby's body next to mine
Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to lose
Nothin' left is all that Bobby left me

Feelin good was easy, Lord
When he sang the blues
And buddy, that was good enough for me
Good enough for me and Bobby McGee

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Drifters’ song Me and Bobby McGee tell the story of two drifters journeying across the southern United States. The first verse opens with the singer, who is down on his luck and feeling defeated, waiting in Baton Rouge for a train. Bobby, the other protagonist of the song, manages to hitch a ride for both of them on a diesel truck heading to New Orleans just as it begins to rain. The singer then describes playing his harpoon (a type of harmonica) softly while Bobby sings the blues with the windshield wipers keeping time. Together, they sing every song the driver knows, feeling free despite having nothing left to lose.

The second verse takes us on a journey from the Kentucky coal mines to the California sun as Bobby keeps the singer company and helps them survive through thick and thin. Finally, near Salinas, the singer loses Bobby, who is presumably looking for a place to settle and call home. Despite knowing they’ll never be with Bobby again, the singer would trade anything to have one more moment with him. The chorus repeats the idea that feeling good is easy when Bobby sings the blues, and that was good enough for the singer.

Overall, the song paints a vivid picture of two people who are searching for freedom and happiness through their shared experiences on the road. Although they never find the ultimate stability they crave, they still manage to find joy in each other and their music.

I think the line ‘Until I let you go, is actually ‘Until he lets you go’ which implies that she is possibly married to someone else. This would make sense about why the singer and her have to keep their relationship secret. That’s how I’ve always viewed this great song
