Mexican Divorce
The Drifters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Down below El Paso lies Juarez
Mexico is different yes like a travel folder says
Cross the Rio Grande and you will find
An old adobe house
Where you leave your past behind

One day married, next day free
Broken hearts for you and me
Takes no time, and all you to get
A Mexican divorce

As I came into this empty house last night
Looked at all my windows, yes I did but I couldn't find one light

I found you on that road to Mexico
And now, my love, I beg
Please, oh, please, don't go

One day married, next day free
Broken hearts for you and me
Takes no time, and all you to get
A Mexican divorce

Finding love takes so long
Walking out must be wrong
It's a sin for you to get a Mexican divorce

One day married, next day free
Broken hearts for you and me

Overall Meaning

The Drifters’ song “Mexican Divorce” is a timeless track that speaks to the fleeting nature of love and relationships. The song opens with the lyrics “Down below El Paso lies Juarez / Mexico is different yes like a travel folder says / Cross the Rio Grande and you will find / An old adobe house / Where you leave your past behind.” These lines can be interpreted as an invitation to escape the past and start anew in Mexico. The singer suggests that Mexico is a place where one can forget their troubles and begin again.

However, the song quickly takes a darker turn as the singer sings about the ease of obtaining a “Mexican divorce.” This line refers to a situation where someone can easily dissolve their marriage in Mexico and move on with their lives. The lyrics “One day married, next day free / Broken hearts for you and me / Takes no time, and all you to get / A Mexican divorce” perfectly capture the carelessness and recklessness of relationships in the 1960s.

The final lines of the song offer a poignant statement on relationships, “Finding love takes so long / Walking out must be wrong / It's a sin for you to get a Mexican divorce.” The lyrics suggest that although finding love can be a long and arduous journey, abandoning it so easily is wrong, and one must hold on to love, despite the difficulties that come with it.

"Mexican Divorce" is my favorite Drifters record after "There Goes My Baby, "This Magic Moment", and "Some Kind of Wonderful"...
But come to think about it, everything the Drifters did was pretty good...

You hardly heard this record on the radio when it came out - but the music is great and it nice to dance to - And so for that reason - I like it The Drifters is one of the most popular group there is and I love all their hits including “Mexican Divorce” “I Count The Tears” “There Goes My Baby” This Magic Moment” “Dance With Me”. Yes - Yes - ALL The Drifters Songs - They Make Hits after Hits - They Dominated the charts in the 60’s - The Drifters is a BIG PART OF THE Rock and Roll Era

A long time ago, whenever I thought of The Drifters, I thought of either Clyde McPhatter or Ben King. Then I got the Drifters box set and I learned a lesson: virtually ALL my favorite Drifters songs were sung by the late great Rudy Lewis. What a voice. What subtlety. What depth.
