My Girl
The Drifters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've got sunshine on a cloudy day
When it's cold outside I've got the month of May
I guess you'd say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl)

I've got so much honey the bees envy me
I've got a sweeter song than the birds in the trees
I guess you'd say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl)

Hey hey hey
Hey hey hey
Ooh

I don't need no money, fortune, or fame
I've got all the riches baby one man can claim
I guess you'd say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl)

I've got sunshine on a cloudy day
With my girl

I've even got the month of May
With my girl

Overall Meaning

The Drifters' hit song "My Girl" is a classic love song that's simple yet expressive. The lyrics showcase the singer's love for his girl, and how everything in his world is bright and beautiful because of her presence. The opening lines of the song, "I've got sunshine on a cloudy day / When it's cold outside I've got the month of May," paint a vivid picture of the singer's blissful life with his girl. He's so content with his love for her that even the dreariest of days feel sunny and warm. The second verse highlights how sweet their love is, with lines like "I've got so much honey the bees envy me / I've got a sweeter song than the birds in the trees."

The chorus of the song further emphasizes the singer's devotion to his girl by repeating "Talkin' 'bout my girl (my girl)" twice after each mention of her. The bridge of the song reveals that he doesn't need any materialistic possessions because his girl is his greatest treasure, "I don't need no money, fortune, or fame / I've got all the riches baby one man can claim." The repetition of the opening lines at the end of the song, "I've got sunshine on a cloudy day / With my girl / I've even got the month of May / With my girl," shows that nothing can dim his happiness as long as he's with his beloved.

I think the line ‘Until I let you go, is actually ‘Until he lets you go’ which implies that she is possibly married to someone else. This would make sense about why the singer and her have to keep their relationship secret. That’s how I’ve always viewed this great song
