On The Street Where You Live
The Drifters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I have often walked
Down the street before,
But the pavement always
Stayed beneath my feet before.
All at once am i
Several stories high,
Knowing I?m on the street where you live.
Are there lilac trees
In the heart of town?
Can you hear a lark in any other part of town?
Does enchantment pour
Out of every door?
No, it?s just on the street where you live.

And oh, the towering feeling
Just to know somehow you are near
The overpowering feeling
That any second you may suddenly appear.

People stop and stare
They don?t bother me,
For there?s no where else on earth
That I would rather be.

Let the time go by,
I won?t care if i
Can be here on the street where you live.

People stop and stare
They don?t bother me,
For there?s no where else on earth
That I would rather be.
Let the time go by
I won?t care if i
Can be here on the street where you live,

Let me be on the street where you live.

Overall Meaning

The Drifters' hit "On The Street Where You Live" is a love song about the intense feelings of being in love and wanting to be near the object of affection. The song's lyrics depict a man who is enchanted with his lover and feels that nothing else in the world matters when he's in her presence. The first verse sets the scene of the man walking down a familiar street and suddenly feeling elevated, almost as if he's floating in the air, due to the joy of knowing that he's on the street where his lover lives.

The second verse paints a picture of enchantment and wonder, asking whether any other part of town has lilac trees or the sound of a lark singing. The answer is no, as the feeling of enchantment is reserved just for the street where his beloved resides. The chorus emphasizes the overwhelming feeling of being near someone loved, the height of emotion, the overpowering feeling that any moment they might appear, and the fact that there's nowhere else he'd rather be than on the street where she lives.

The final verse repeats the chorus with the additional line, “Let me be on the street where you live,” emphasizing the desire and longing to be close to the person they love. Overall, the song captures the euphoria and blissful sensation of being in love and the joy of following that love to familiar environs that become enchanted in the light of that love.

I think the line ‘Until I let you go, is actually ‘Until he lets you go’ which implies that she is possibly married to someone else. This would make sense about why the singer and her have to keep their relationship secret. That’s how I’ve always viewed this great song
