Safe The Last Dance For Me
The Drifters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You can dance every dance with the guy
Who gives you the eye, let him hold you tight
You can smile every smile for the man
Who held your hand 'neath the pale moonlight

But don't forget who's taking you home
And in whose arms you're gonna be
So darlin', save the last dance for me, hmm

Oh, I know that the music's fine (oh, I know, yes I know)
Like sparkling wine go and have your fun
Laugh and sing but while we're apart
Don't give your heart to anyone

But don't forget who's taking you home
And in whose arms you're gonna be
So darlin', save the last dance for me, hmm

Baby, don't you know I love you so?
Can't you feel it when we touch?
I will never, never let you go
I love you, oh, so much

You can dance, go and carry on
'Till the night is gone and it's time to go
If he asks, if you're all alone
Can he take you home, you must tell him, no

'Cause don't forget who's taking you home
And in whose arm's you're gonna be
So darlin', save the last dance for me

'Cause don't forget who's taking you home
And in whose arm's you're gonna be
So darlin', save the last dance for me, hmm

Save the last dance for me, hmm, hmm
Save the last dance for me, hmmm
Save

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Save The Last Dance For Me" by The Drifters with Ben E. King are a loving reminder from the singer to his partner to enjoy herself on the dance floor but to remain loyal to him. The singer acknowledges that his partner can dance with other men and enjoy herself but he implores her to remember who is taking her home and who will be holding her in his arms at the end of the night. The singer is accepting of his partner having a good time but does not want her to forget about their love and commitment to each other, and asks her to save the last dance for him as a way of affirming their bond.

The lyrics also touch upon the idea of trust and possessiveness in a romantic relationship. The singer acknowledges that his partner may be approached by other men while they are apart, but he asks her to refuse their advances and to remember her love for him. This speaks to the idea that jealousy and possessiveness can arise in romantic relationships when trust is not established or maintained. The singer is asking his partner to save the last dance for him as a way of showing her respect and loyalty to their love.

I'm 81. This takes me back to when I had my heart shattered in 1960 (Down Under). Happened a few times, but here we are 65 years later with some great memories of simpler times and some extraordinary music. Would not have missed it for quids!!! 👍👍👍😄😃😀😂🤗
