Suddenly There's a Valley
The Drifters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When you've climbed the highest mountain
When a cloud holds the sunshine in
Suddenly there's a valley
Where the earth knows peace with man
When a storm hides the distant rainbow
And you think you can't find a friend
Suddenly there's a valley
Where friendships never end
Touched only by the seasons
Swept clean by the waving grain
Surveyed by a happy bluebird
And kissed by the falling rain
When you think there's no bright tomorrow
And you feel you can't try again
Suddenly there's a valley
Where hope and love begin

Suddenly there's a valley
Where hope and love begin

Overall Meaning

The Drifters' song "Suddenly There's a Valley" is a touching ballad about the beauty of unexpected moments of peace, friendship, hope, and love that come our way when we least expect them. The lyrics speak of a journey, possibly an internal one, where the singer has endured difficult times, climbed the highest mountain, and faced storms that have hidden the distant rainbow of hope. In those moments of darkness, the earth knows peace with man, and suddenly there's a valley where friendships never end.

The imagery in the song describes a bucolic valley untouched by the storms that have shaken the singer's journey. The valley is untouched by the passing of time, cleaned by the waving grain, surveyed by a happy bluebird, and kissed by the falling rain. The lyrics also suggest that this valley is a state of mind where hope and love can begin when one feels there is no bright tomorrow and cannot try again. Suddenly there's a valley where hope and love begin, a refuge where the weary soul can find comfort and solace.

I think the line ‘Until I let you go, is actually ‘Until he lets you go’ which implies that she is possibly married to someone else. This would make sense about why the singer and her have to keep their relationship secret. That’s how I’ve always viewed this great song
