(Bo-bo, doo-doot-doo-doo-doo-doo)
(There she goes) (doo-doot-doo-doo-doo-doo)
(There she goes) (doo-doot-doo-doo-doo-doo)
(Bo-bo) (doo-doot-doo-doo)
(Bo-bo) (doo-doo-doo-doo)

There goes my baby, movin' on down the line
Wonder where, wonder where, wonder where she is bound?
I broke her heart and made her cry
Now I'm alone, so all alone
What can I do, what can I do?

(There goes my baby) whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh
(There goes my baby) yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
(There goes my baby) whoa-oh-oh-oh
(There she goes)

I want to know if she loved me (there she goes)
Did she really love me?
Was she just playing me for a fool?

I wonder why she left me
Why did she leave me so all alone
So all alone

I just wanna tell her that I loved her
And that I need her
Beside my side to be my guide

I want to know where is my (doo-doot-doo-doo-doo-doo)
Where is my baby (doo-doot-doo-doo-doo-doo)
I want my baby
I need my baby
Yeah, whoa-oh-oh (there goes my baby)
(There goes my baby)
(There goes my baby) whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Drifters' classic hit "There Goes My Baby" describe the pain and loneliness of heartbreak. The song's protagonist is left alone after breaking his lover's heart and now wonders where she has gone. The repetition of the line "there she goes" adds to the sense of loss and heartache. The lyrics also express the singer's desire to know the truth about the relationship and if his lover truly loved him or simply played him for a fool. The song ends with the singer hoping to be reunited with his lost love, expressing his need for her presence in his life.

The emotional depth of the lyrics, combined with The Drifters' soulful harmonies, made "There Goes My Baby" a pop and R&B classic. Released in 1959, the song paved the way for soul music and marked an important transition from doo-wop to R&B. It was co-written by Ben E. King, who would later become a member of The Drifters, and produced by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who were known for their work with Elvis Presley, The Coasters, and other notable acts.

When this tune was first played in Philadelphia back in 1959, a local DJ on WDAS, Georgie Woods played it about 10 times in a row. He was was stunned by the Drifters performance. I agreed . The tympani drums, the strings, the haunting plaintive chanting of Ben E King was something I had never heard before in my 15 years. I feel the same today approaching my 80th birthday.

I don't know you and I don't think we'll ever meet but I'd like to first wish you a happy birthday. Secondly, as a 50 year old who was an 80s teenager, I envy you for being at the 'right time'. The 1950s/ 60s will always be my favorite era for the fashion and music
