What'cha Gonna Do
The Drifters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Wooooh!

Don't do what I did
Don't do what I have done
Turning the world against ya
All in the name of having fun
You've got yourself to blame
You'll only feel ashamed
Like I do
Don't do what I did.

Don't do what I did
Don't break a beating heart
Don't try to rend asunder
What no man should tear apart
You'll always feel so bad
You'll only wish you hadn't
Done like I did
Don't do what I have done.

All the love I ever had
Only ever wanted bad
Bad enough to wind up dead
All the moves I might've made
All the best plans ever laid
Only wound up shot instead.

Don't do what I did
You break your own heart first
If you're miserable now, just wait
It only hurts all the worse
Like a presence that won't leave
It makes it hard to breathe
Don't do what I have done.

This is not a helping hand
I'm not one to understand
I'm just pointing out the time to you
How much more can one soul take
What's the measure of mistake
When all you ever make is mine.

Once you're a loser
All you can learn to do is
Don't do what I did
And pick on a love that's true
That was the big mistake
The one that I had to make
Don't do what I did
Don't do what I did
Don't do what I have done.

Overall Meaning

The Drifters' song What to Do is filled with wise advice for anyone who has not yet learned from their own mistakes. The song's narrator is warning listeners against making the same mistakes he has made in love and life. He insists that he has lived and learned, and now he's paying the price for his mistakes. He advises listeners not to do what he did or break a loving heart just for fun. He warns them that they will only hurt themselves and regret their actions in the end.

The song also touches on the irreversibility of some decisions. The singer laments that all the love he ever had only ever wanted something bad, bad enough that it has led him to the brink of death. He also acknowledges that all the moves he planned and all the best-planned schemes all ended up backfiring, leading him to feel lost and alone. Despite his cynical disposition, he acknowledges that there's always hope and a chance to make things right. He urges listeners not to make the same mistakes he has made in love and life.

Before the Temptations these guys were the group to notice with lead and the harmony.

@TheBaylor22

One of the great rocknroll songs of all time,by one of finest groups ever put together. The Temptations were fabulous. Excellent singers, phenomenal writers, and wonderful choreography. That said, as good as they were, as good as they sang, not one of them were as talented as the
Drifter’s top three leads. No slight to the Temps. That’s just how
good that group was.

Whatcha Gonna Do, Come Go With Me, and the Drifter’s original rendition of Ruby Baby are still the best pure rock n roll songs I’ve ever heard.

@robertthomas615

This was the last Drifters' single on which Clyde McPhatter was billed and sang lead. He left after this session for a solo career (also on Atlantic) and was "replaced" by Johnny Moore for their next hit, Adorable, a cover of a tune by a wesst coast group, The Colts.

@Mike_The_1950s_Historian

This rocker by Clyde McPhatter and The Drifters makes me want to replace the lyrics with "Come on baby, let's do The Twist!"😁

Well, apparently this song is the source for Hank Ballard and The Modnighters' dance song, which of course, became the monster phenomenon when Ernest "Chubby Checker" Evans redid it.

@markjarrett9794

In my humble opinion, this was the first rock and roll song. It still gives me a chill. Clyde McPhatter kills it. ❤ to Jerry Wexler. Check out Deep Sea Ball and Hank Ballard Finger Poppin Time
