The band’s first release was a four song EP entitled SIX HOLLOW PERFECT THINGS. Included were the songs “Six Feet Under,” “Hollow,” “Perfect (Dream)” and “Common Things.”
The debut full length HOLLOW was released in June 2002 on the Morphenic Release imprint. Live ventures followed and included performances alongside scene favorites like The Mission (UK), The Cruxshadows, Voltaire, Gene Loves Jezebel, Stromkern and Assemblage 23. Many of the songs on HOLLOW still receive generous club and gothic radio play, while the title track was included on both the M&A MusicArt compilation “Angel Child VI: The Need for Silence” and the Cop International issued “Dark Awakening: Volume 4.”
A three-song EP titled NEW DISEASE followed. The EP once again showcased The Drowning Season’s unique brand of guitar influenced gothic rock forged on their earlier releases. The band quickly returned to live activity. The Last Dance, Bella Morte, Ego Likeness and The Start were among the high profile acts with whom they would share the stage during this series of shows.
February 2009 saw the release of the long anticipated second full length album, CURSE. The Drowning Season opened for The Azoic at Dracula's Ball in Philadelphia (one of the largest dark music events in the United States), and the band traveled to Chicago to perform at a Wax Trax II Records showcase. Their dance floor favorite "Angel of the Odd" was included on the "WTII Sunday Showcases 4 Year Anniversary Sampler."
The Drowning Season is currently writing and recording songs for their next album, DRUM MACHINES AND AMPHETAMINES.
Over the years, gothic rock had many voices and as many faces. And while electronic dance music continues to flourish in the dark music scene, one band defies the status quo to produce dark original guitar-oriented music that harkens back to the days of pointy boots and clove cigarettes. We are The Drowning Season.
Godspeed
The Drowning Season Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The pounding that burns deep inside of you
Lines that blur the point to your redemption
Perfect dreams come crashing into view
Angels are calling - Godspeed
Whispering softly - Godspeed
Repeating your mantra - Godspeed
Spinning tales Speak of some lost innocence
Tears shall wash the walls that never shine
Days spent chasing Shiva in the shallow room
Nights chased with abandon down the line
Angels are calling - Godspeed
Whispering softly - Godspeed
Repeating your mantra - Godspeed
Godspeed to you.
The lyrics of "Godspeed" by The Drowning Season explore the internal struggle of the singer who is dealing with intense emotions that are causing them to feel a sense of haunting desperation. The opening line, "Pounding at your chest with the fist of god" creates a visual of someone who has been struck by a powerful force that is both overwhelming and consuming. The pounding is described as something that "burns deep inside of you," indicating that the singer is dealing with something that is not merely physical, but a feeling that is taking over their entire being.
The next line, "Lines that blur the point to your redemption," is a powerful description of how the singer is trying to make sense of their experience. The concept of redemption implies that the singer is aware that they have done something wrong and are seeking to make amends. However, the lines are blurred, which suggests that they are struggling to understand what it is they need to do to find redemption.
The rest of the song portrays a sense of chasing something elusive, something that can never be fully grasped. The singer speaks of lost innocence, tears that wash walls that never shine, and days spent chasing something in a shallow room. It's clear that they are searching for something that will give them a sense of purpose or belonging, but they are struggling to find it. In the end, the song concludes with a repeating of the phrase "Godspeed to you," which can be interpreted as being both a blessing and a farewell.
Overall, the lyrics of "Godspeed" by The Drowning Season are a powerful commentary on the human experience, exploring themes of loss, struggle, and the search for redemption.

When shadows come to claim our souls
Some must rise, the light of old
Names in stone spirits of legend
Deeds unknown yet never forgotten
These are the Deranin
Of honor with in
And of fear with out
Remember them
When in hope you doubt.

One day I fell asleep with my headphones on, listening to the random playlist YouTube recommends you time by time.
I woke in the middle of the night, when this song started to play. The kind of interference sound of the beggining set my nerves on fire as i got up from the bed, wondering what the hell was going on. I found myself alone in the middle of the dark, hearing some creepy shit that i didn't knew where was coming from, thinking that something really bad was going to happen to me. I was, genuinely scared for at least ten seconds.
The creepy ambiance ended when I found that i had my headphones on all along and what I was hearing was a YouTube video.
The video was a playlist named "Songs for the end of the world" and god damn that name fits it pretty fucking well. I really thought the end was near.
It's a nice memory tho. One of the few times i was truly scared in my entire life.

10:11-10:51 sounds so crazy. It makes me feel a lot of emotions: Identity, Fear, Loss, Hopelessness, and Defiance.
Every time I hear it, I picture a soldier watching a fierce battle take place. They know in their tired bones that the war isn’t over. They feel tired, lost, and scared. Despite that, they keep pushing forward, hoping to survive.
Another time I see a person watching a bustling city from a tall building. The moon and the stars shine so brightly. They’re scared, and alone. They want to find meaning to their life. Despite the fear and uncertainty, they keep moving forward. This instrumental is one of my favorites and one I will keep listening to until I die, simply because this is what the human spirit.
Despite the hardships we face, and the struggles that consume us, we keep moving forward. We defy the odds at every turn. We rage against the dying light in the hope that we will one day soar amongst the stars.
Keep climbing, my friends. The self is the greatest enemy. Conquer it and even the stars will bow to you
The-Jaded
Handful of quicksand
Where starlit once enlightened
Lives rush like ravines
Instead of beloved ones
We are held by our worst enemies
Crafted from our own mirror image
A pierrotesque sad jest scepticist
On the fields of care and justice
That is merely about control
I make recordings in the gray steppe
About my voice being torn out
Fading like the drive of "being roped into this"
The final generation is one without tongue, love, ideals, or communication

Say what you will about Godspeed, I dont think Ive ever come across more human music than this. Its every second is filled with so much life. Not a perspective of life. Life itself. In all its glorious imperfection. For some reason the line "Rage, rage against the dying of the light" pops in my head as I listen to this. Its as though this song is an age old story, sometimes etched into walls, sometimes passed down through generations, being retold in different mediums but never losing its essence. A story of the weak and flawed humans, in their utter servitude to countless powers greater than themselves, choosing to rise up and despite their innumerable limitations refusing to give up, no matter what adversity they may face. All I hear in this is struggle, and thats arguably one of the most human things ever. To all the people commenting their stories of pain and struggle, just remember that you contain the matter of stars within you, you are an instantiation of the entire universe itself. While struggle is inevitable, we always carry the tools necessary to overcome, sometimes we gain the answers from deep within ourselves - from the universe itself. Best of luck and God bless.

I love GYBE since the good old days in 1997, BUT... just listen to Beethoven's legendary final string quartets.

Your comment made me cry. GYBE in the background, your comment, and the memory of my recently deceased mother took me over the edge.

My friend died two weeks (probably due to suicide) and this was his last song on Lastfm. I guess he was listening to it as he overdosed on drugs or something. He was a very avid music listener and I guess he found this song meaningful in his last moments.

Sorry for your loss, man. I recently lost one of my best friends, probably due to drug-related cardiac complications, so I definitely get it. Thing is, I should be utterly devastated, and yet I'm really not. Why? Well, this friend was there for me during the darkest period of my entire life - a bitter, lonely morass of sorrow and despondence. When he died, I was finally beginning to free myself of that pitiable state of being, so when he died, though his unanticipated demise tore my heart straight from my chest initially, ultimately I resolved to make a concerted effort to better myself, live up to my full potential, and find solace in my life; no doubt, that's what he would want me to do. I'm sure your friend feels the same way. I hope this helps, dude. Take care of yourself!
Peace

I'm so sorry to hear what's happened to both of you. I've been lucky enough to have not experienced any of that, it sounds utterly horrible. I wish you all the best.
