Book Of Stories
The Drums Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're perfect photographs on the wall
And if I know you you're ok
I don't wanna dance anymore
I don't wanna sing anymore
I don't wanna dance anymore we used to sing

I thought I'd be ok till I hit that floor
I thought I'd be fine till I needed more

I thought I'd be okay till I hit that floor
Oh, I need more I need more I need more

I thought my life would get easier
Instead its getting harder, instead it's getting harder

I thought my life would get easier,
Instead it's darker, instead it's getting colder
Without you

My life's a book of short stories,
And we wrote a new one everyday

I don't understand anymore
You don't love me anymore
I don't understand anymore and I can't think

Why can't I let you go?

Why can't I let you go?
Hate you I wanted to hate you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Book of Stories" by The Drums are about the aftermath of a break-up as the singer navigates a new reality without their former partner. The song is filled with conflicting emotions as the singer reminisces on their past with the ex-lover and their struggles to move on. The opening lines reference photographs on the wall, perhaps alluding to a happy time in the relationship before everything fell apart. The following lyrics suggest that the singer doesn't want to dance or sing anymore, likely due to the fact that doing those things brings back memories of their time together. The repetition of the phrase "I thought I'd be okay till I hit that floor" speaks to the unexpected pain that can come up when trying to move on from a past love.

The chorus is a reflection on how the singer's life has changed since the break-up. They thought it would get easier, but instead, it has become darker and colder without the presence of their loved one. The metaphor of "my life's a book of short stories, and we wrote a new one every day" speaks to how their life and relationship were constantly evolving, but now, they're stuck in a new chapter without their partner. The song ends with the singer expressing their frustration and confusion over why they can't let go of their ex-lover, even though they know they should.

I think these guys sound better here (2017) than when I saw them which was I think 2012. They were still very good then but here they seem even more refined

Charlie Conneely

Prob because these guys are legit session musicians. Some of the original drums weren't that experienced with the instruments they played
