Days
The Drums Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And our days go by
And I never needed you
And our days go by
And I never needed you

And I worked so hard
And I killed myself
And you broke my bones
And I sold my soul

But now days go by
And I never needed you
But now days go by
And I never needed you, ooh-ooh

And I could have been your mother
And I could have been your sister (ooh-ooh)
Be your (ooh-ooh) twin brother (ooh-ooh)
I just wanted to be (ooh-ooh), wanted to be

And our days go by
And I never needed you
But now days go by
And I never needed you, ooh-ooh

We were just wasting time
We were just wasting time
We were just wasting time
We were just wasting time
We were just wasting time
We were just wasting time

And our days go by
And I never needed you
But now days go by
And I never needed you

But now days go by
And I never needed you
But now days go by
And I never needed you

Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh

Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Drums's song "Days" paint a picture of someone who is trying hard to make things work, to be successful, but who is met with disappointment and hurt. The repeated lines "And our days go by / And I never needed you" suggest a sense of freedom - the singer has not needed the person they are addressing, and they have perhaps grown apart or realized they were better off without them. The next lines reveal the effort the singer has put in to achieve this sense of independence - "And I worked so hard / And I killed myself" - and the subsequent betrayal they feel - "And you broke my bones / And I sold my soul." These powerful images suggest a deep level of hurt and pain, but also a sense of resilience and determination.

The singer then shifts into a "could have been" mode, imagining different roles they could have played in the other person's life. "I could have been your mother / And I could have been your sister / Be your twin brother / I just wanted to be, wanted to be." This suggests a sense of longing for connection, of wanting to belong, but also the recognition that they are better off without this person.

The final stanza, repeated several times, underscores the feeling of waste - "We were just wasting time" - and the sense of freedom from the need for the other person. The repetition of "And our days go by / And I never needed you" drives home the message that the singer has moved on and is happy to be free of the other person.
