But I was looking for a gun
On a cold night then you found me
God help me
Because I feel you drifting
You're drifting a little
And I'm scared
And I hope time
Doesn't change him
I hope time
Doesn't change him
I hope time
Doesn't change him
I hope time
Doesn't change him
When you hold my hand
Your eyes are looking out the window
I'm afraid to ask
So help me
because I feel you drifting
You're drifting a little
And I'm scared
And I hope time
Doesn't change him
I hope time
Doesn't change him
I hope time
Doesn't change him
I hope time
Doesn't change him
And I hope time
Doesn't change him
I hope time
Doesn't change him
I hope time
Doesn't change him
I hope time
Doesn't change him
The Drums’ song “I Hope Time Doesn’t Change Him” is a poignant and emotional track about the singer’s fear of losing someone they love. In the beginning of the song, the singer admits that they have been struggling with dark thoughts, saying, “I never thought I’d wanna die, but I was looking for a gun on a cold night then you found me.” This sets the tone for the rest of the song, as the singer reveals their vulnerability and dependence on the person they’re singing to.
As the song progresses, the singer grows increasingly worried that their loved one is pulling away from them. They plead for help, singing, “God help me, because I feel you drifting, you’re drifting a little and I’m scared.” The repetition of this line drives home the weight of their fears and the urgency of their plea. The chorus, “I hope time doesn’t change him,” is a simple yet powerful statement of their desire for things to stay the same.
The song’s bridge adds another layer of meaning to the lyrics. The singer describes being afraid to ask their loved one what’s wrong because they don’t want to risk losing them. They’re caught between their fear of losing the person and their fear of the answer they might receive. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, a last-ditch effort to hold onto what they have.
Overall, “I Hope Time Doesn’t Change Him” is an emotional song that captures the complexities of love and fear. The singer’s vulnerability is palpable throughout the song, and the repeating chorus adds to the feeling of desperation and urgency.
