The Drums were formed in late 2006. Relocating to New York, The Drums added former Elkland guitarist Adam Kessler on second guitar and NYC born drummer Connor Hanwick (formerly of lo-fi teen pop duo Cape of No Hope) to the line up and set up a month long residency at a small club on the lower east side of Manhattan. They released their debut single Let's Go Surfing on on 15 September 2009, which the Let's Go Surfing Songfacts reports was inspired by Barack Obama's victory in the 2008 presidential election.
In September 2010, guitarist Adam Kessler left the band, Followed by Connor Hanwick in 2012 and Jacob Graham in 2016.
Jonny Pierce is the only remaining member.

Honey, while the stars are still shining
Wake up, would you like to go with me
Honey, take a run down to the beach
Oh momma, I wanna go surfin'
Oh momma, I don't care about nothing
Honey, he's moving into the big house
Remember when I was so very hopeless
Darling, he's gonna make it all better
Oh momma, I wanna go surfin'
Oh momma, I don't care about nothing
Down down baby down by the rollercoaster
Sweet sweet baby I'll never let you go
Down down baby down by the rollercoaster
Sweet sweet baby I'll never let you go
Down down baby down by the rollercoaster
Sweet sweet baby I'll never let you go
Down down baby down by the rollercoaster
Sweet sweet baby I'll never let you go
Oh momma, I wanna go surfin'
Oh momma, I don't care about nothing
Oh momma, I wanna go surfin'
Oh momma, I don't care about nothing
The Drums's song Let is an upbeat, nostalgic tune that takes listeners back to a sunny, carefree day at the beach. The lyrics are an invitation to wake up early and enjoy the beauty of the morning with a run to the beach. The singer expresses their desire to go surfing, regardless of what else is going on in their life. The arrival of a new kid in town is referenced, but it's suggested that their presence won't have any significant impact on the singer's desire to simply enjoy the present moment.
The second half of the song repeats the chorus, followed by a playful chant of "Down down baby down by the rollercoaster/Sweet sweet baby I'll never let you go". This chant acts as a transition between the verses, highlighting the nostalgic, carefree vibe of the song.
Overall, Let is a feel-good song that celebrates the small pleasures in life and encourages listeners to embrace the present moment. It's a reminder to appreciate the beauty of the world around us and to not get too caught up in life's stresses.
