My Sunken Treasure
The Duke Spirit Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You, you don't feel like mine anymore
This night I wrestle with pride on the floor
That's 'cause you don't look back like I look back
That's 'cause you don't look back like I look back

Well, if I'm undone by thinking along
I whistle to prove, I move by the men
And I don't swim much save in bad times
Treasure it sunk when I gave up on lies

Yeah, you don't look back like I look back
That's 'cause you don't look back like I look back

Oh, you have your own heart and I can't be rid of mine
Still you walk this one path and I can't be driven from mine
Oh, you have your own heart and I won't be rid of mine
Oh, you have this one path and I can't be driven from mine

But you you don't feel like mine anymore
And each night I wonder if I'm back by the good.
That's 'cause you don't look back like I look back
Oh, that's 'cause you don't look back like I look back

So you have your own heart and I can't be rid of mine
Yeah, you walk this one path and I can't be driven from mine
Oh, you have your own heart and I won't be rid of mine
Oh, you have this one path and I can't be driven from mine

All my sunken treasure, I'm swimming to get you
All my sunken treasure, I'm swimming to get you
All my sunken treasure, I'm swimming to get you
All my sunken treasure, I'm swimming to get you

All my sunken treasure, I'm swimming to get you

Overall Meaning

The first verse of “My Sunken Treasure” by The Duke Spirit portrays a sense of emotional disconnection. The singer acknowledges that she doesn't have control over her lover's feelings anymore. They have drifted apart, and her lover does not reciprocate the same intensity of love that she has. The imagery of wrestling on the floor with pride represents her struggle in dealing with the pain of this realization. She looks back on their relationship, but her lover doesn't. This suggests that she is still hung up on the past, while her lover is moving forward. She tries to move on and forget, but her lover's indifference makes it hard for her to let go.

In the second verse, the singer portrays a feeling of being lost and undone. She thinks too much, and it takes a toll on her emotional stability. The line, “I whistle to prove, I move by the men,” implies that she puts on a front to appear strong and unaffected by the situation. She doesn't swim much in good times, suggesting that happiness feels a bit foreign to her. She has given up on lies, and the treasure that sunk represents her hope for a happy future. However, it seems that this hope is fleeting, and she is struggling to keep herself afloat.

In the chorus, the singer repeats that her lover doesn't feel like hers anymore, and she wonders if there's a way to go back to the good times they had. She then acknowledges that her lover has their own heart that she cannot be rid of, and that they are on a different path. Despite this, she remains determined to continue her own journey of finding love, as if swimming to retrieve her sunken treasure.

How was this song not all over the place when it came out, and even now? So much to love about it.

His Royal Highness

This is painfully underappreciated

back when this was released, I picked up the disc in Los Angeles (during a trip to grab a roomate and take back to Detroit) we played this CD a lot the drive from Los Angeles to Detroit, we spent about a full week making that road trip, stopping at nice and shitty hotels along the way for mischief and debauchery. interesting side note, there was a major fire in California and when leaving I looked in the rear view mirror and saw the fire and flames, I had a weird surreal feeling like I was driving out of hell or something.
