Overall Meaning

The Dutch's song "All my life" is a reflection on the transient nature of life and memories. The first verse suggests that we accumulate memories throughout our lives, but questions whether they will all stay with us forever or if they will eventually fade away. What qualifies as a direct addition to you? I would argue that the GTA 3 universe did it first, even if RDR2 did it better. While the first prequels were mostly just a few elements, the tie-ins became enough prominent that I would have a hard time not calling it a direct addition:

GTA 3: first game in universe
GTA Vice City: Some characters reappear and get fleshed out
GTA San Andreas: Some characters reappear and get fleshed out, including the playable character from GTA 3
GTA Liberty City Stories. Same place, many reappearing characters and plot centers around the mob wars and control of the city, which sets up part of the stage for GTA 3. The playable characters is one of the main characters in GTA 3
GTA Vice city Stories: You play as the brother of the main villain from Vice City and otherwise it serves the same purpose to Vice City as LCS did to GTA 3.

So tell me, in what way did RDR2 differ to be the first direct addition compared to the two Stories games? Even if that wasn't the first time, the DLC for GTA 4, was sold as stand alone additions and they all centered around the same event from the main game. The three way score for the diamonds. You get to see the same event from all three sides, how is that not a direct addition? Or are they not recognized since it was DLC, even though it was sold as a separate game?

Dutch’s words were always “ we need one final score” or “ we just need a bit more money” because he was a man trying to justify his failures to himself. You know what pissed me off about that the most? That he gave this old woman a gold bar to lead them through the cave to the door(never mind the fact the cave was literally a one-way passage that didn't require guidance in the first place), then he kills her, and he doesn't even take the gold bar back(and you're not given the option to loot). Its crazy just how well they managed to pull the sequel and RDR1 together so masterfully. Normally Prequels suck but this is definitely up there as one of the best. In the end, Arthur may be one of the few that got true redemption. Even John had trouble in that regard. Dutch only compounded the fact he was rotten at his core as time went on, unlike John and the rest.

There is a book passasge in the camp, near Dutche's tent. If you read it, it talks about a man being called out by a women, for what he really is (in context of the book, the man has tried to sentance his brother to hang, knowing he had done nothing wrong). When the man is confronted by her, he realises that she is right and accepts that he has made poor judgement. He then decides that the best way for a true Englishman, to be held accountable for the lives he's destroyed, is to throw himself out of the window and perish onto the rocks below. He only does this when he truely realises that he has not acted like a gentlemen. I think Dutch, being as poetic as he was, with all his charisma saw this as a inspirational moment in the book and a fitting way to go out for a man who has come to the realisation that he has become everything he once hated, and must be held accountable for those he hurt, to forward his own ambitions. The foreshadowing is incredible...

Dutch is one of the most well-written anti-villains of all time. I thought he was a very interesting character in the first game, but we only got to know so much about him. One of those things, however, was that John looked up to him until he supposedly went "crazy", which is then shown in the excellent prequel. I think in the end, only Arthur and John truly understood Dutch. They were like sons to him. Some others surely saw the changes in Dutch, but not like Arthur and John did. Some others simply followed him blindly, free of any perception of what was happening to the gang. I think when Arthur laid dying before Dutch, he came to some sort of realization about everything. Like Dutch says to John years later during the final Micah encounter, "I ain't got much to say no more". A broken man. Somewhere he knew he'd lost, but he didn't stop fighting. Then, another few years later, Dutch faces off with John one last time. His last protégé. The last one alive who knew who Dutch once were, and what he'd become. The only person alive who could still open up Dutch's eyes and bring back his former self, only to realize his cause in life was finally lost once and for all, and he'd sacrificed all that he loved and held dear along the way. It's very deep, I think. An amazing game by Rockstar!

I think that's why Dutch fell off the cliff; he was almost ready to shoot John on the mountain with Micah because he felt HE was the one being betrayed (and he was, but not by John or Arthur) and he finally came to his senses. Then years later, John comes back to save his family at the cost of Dutch's life, but he can't shoot him because of who Dutch was and who he still has the potential to be, so I think Dutch committed suicide to save John the trouble and torment of killing a man he saw as the father he never really had. Which now makes what Ross does much more despicable when he shoots Dutch's corpse with John's gun

As much as this game was Arthur's story it was also Dutch's too. When this monolog started I just started clapping.

I honestly think this game needs to be recognised for what it is. It's the first time ever that Rockstar have ever made a direct addition to a previous game. Unlike GTA where we may have certain elements revisited. RDR2 is the only game that Rockstar have had such an heavy influence from an previous title weather it being a prequel or not.

I feel that in the original game, with the context that he’s already said this, he actually thinks about what he says. In RDR2 you could see it as him just trying to appease the soldiers, getting them to be more susceptible to any tricks he might pull.

Going by how the lines are delivered in both situations, it seems that Dutch actually realizes that it’s the end in RDR1, and delivers that monologue completely serious.

Thing is with Dutch is I really didn't believe John in the first when he said 'he was a great man once'. But in this, I saw that he was. I really liked him in the beginning, he charmed me like he did Arthur and the rest. But when he leaves Arthur for dead, despite all that had happened before, my heart sank. I never expected it, and it broke my heart. In that moment, I shared in Arthur's pain of being loyal to a man who'd be capable of that. Someone who called him 'son'. Even after that, when Arthur is on the back of Dutch's horse, I can't help but love Dutch, eventhough I fucking hate him. That's why this is art. We feel pain, we feel Arthur's pain.

When I first saw that speech in RDR I thought it was Dutch not wanting to die at John's hand, he wanted to die on his terms or he just didn't want to be captured, but when I heard it in RDR2 I reevaluated. I think in Dutch's insanity (which was built up in RDR2), Dutch sorta flashed back to when he and Arthur were held at gunpoint by the army when John held him at gunpoint, in his mind he was on that ridge overlooking the river not a dead drop onto rock, I think Dutch thought he'd survive the fall, one last daring escape. Just a theory I had.

Maybe Dutch was crazy in a sense of lunatic, not in a way like he's not realistic (in a moment of realizing that death came, because he's very dumb and blind in the last moments of the gang). Maybe he knew it was the end and remembered of that moment with Arthur. But I think that, if this theory is right, it would be a much more literature/poetic and complex death that combines with the character of Dutch. The only thing that may fucks up everything I wrote is that he helped to kill Micah, I felt he was way less crazy than when Arthur died. The may point for that theory is how much crazy Dutch became/was between the death of Micah and his own death.

Dutch Van der Linde realized his huge mistake later in his life. This haunted him for the rest of his life and I believe all he really wanted was to die so he can be relieved of the guilt he carried, but he wanted to die on his own terms instead of at the choking embrace of a noose in front of a large crowd.

He also realizes on this cliff that he was fighting a pointless battle his entire life and he got his family killed because of it. “Our time has passed, John.” is his tribute to Arthur since he was the one who told him the truth.

On the mountain, it was obvious he wasn’t there to team up with Micah. He was out for his blood.

It's hard to say. Some people think it was michas fault which it definitely is partly, but at the same time Arthur thought that it was just Dutch showing his true colors. It's was all the money and bad things he did that made him want more and more to the point where he would do anything, even turn on his own gang, if it meant it were benefiting him. It is really sad seeing a character who cared so much about his gang and everyone else's needs turn into a monster due to his lust over money.

You know what I love about this? I love that, in a sense, this was a way of Rockstar to posthumously honor Arthur even in Rdr1: Dutch was thinking about him just before jumping down the cliff and killing himself. Now we know it. We couldn't have known it when Rdr1 came out, hell, even Rockstar couldn't have known it because Arthur hadn't been invented yet, but they found a way to give those words a new meaning. He was thinking about that moment in the past with Arthur, and probably thinking about the mistakes he made and how he would have wanted to unmake them and have Arthur by his side once again.

There will not be a Red Dead Redemption III. Red Dead Redemption is the main story. Red Dead Redemption II is a prequel that expanded upon how everything got to the point that it did in Red Dead Redemption. A sequel to Red Dead Redemption with Jack would make no sense because the west is dying and we know he becomes an author (from the book in Franklin's house in Grand Theft Auto V). A prequel to a Red Dead Redemption II would make sense, but that would be a prequel to a prequel, and it would be beating a dead horse to say the least. No, I expect them to either write a new story for a new cast or make Red Dead Revolver II and expand upon the world of Red Harlow.

I always loved Dutch. Especially in rdr 2. He was written so great. The whole game I was like “Dutch is gonna get them out of this” and he does a little bit, but sets him and the gang back more than he can fix later on. I had hope just like Arthur did. I cried seeing him in chapter 6 acting the way he did. When he left John for dead twice, left Arthur for dead, sided with Micah, all the gang siding with Dutch, and Dutch hiding with Micah all those years. It was like I had known him for much longer than I’ve played. Rockstar made us care in a way I didn’t think I would care for characters in a silly game. One of the best games I’ve played, to be honest.

I think John had accepted that he deserved all the heat from his time in the gang, and his task from the pinkertons was a messed up form of atonement. But when dutch said they'll just find another beast to hunt I would have said "your looking at him." And drawn my gun and let him choose his fate with no choice of escape but standing like a man in the face of the law at the gallows, or a bullet from a man he left for dead multiple times and in the end betrayed. But John didn't care if Dutch had a hunch about vengeful lawmem, or anything at that point.

I love how well these line up, like it actually makes sense that Dutch of all people would see the irony of this situation and repeat himself. When Dutch says “we can’t fight…gravity.” In RDR1 it sounds like he’s thinking back to when he jumped with Arthur. The delivery really unintentionally worked there. Dutch May have gone insane, but I feel like he had a moment of lucidity in the end. The line “our time has passed, John.” makes so much more sense after RDR2, as he’s echoing Arthur, finally accepting the truth.

After that bank job in Saint Denis, Dutch lost hope. He got poisoned by Micah and just became everything he once preached not to be. He betrayed not only John, but straight up abandoned Arthur! The "father" left both his "sons". Pretty tragic.fall from grace imo

Micah took advantage of Hoseas death and decided to make himself Dutches “2nd hand” and feed into his evilness. After Guarma is when it starts to go to shit for the gang. Micah sees this and attempts to get closer to Dutch for the money he was saving up this wholeeee time at the end of the game. When Arthur’s death comes up i guess Dutch seen that Micah was a rat because he was trying to get rid of the final man that truly knew Dutch, Arthur.

I think Dutch really did try to be good at one point. I like to think he saves John and Sadie to try and say sorry for the man he became after coming to terms with the fact he left both his adoptive sons to die and that he's a bad man deep down. Its a shame Guarma and constantly being hunted turned him sour and drained his hope the way it did

I don't know, many times Arthur Morgan says that Dutch never actually changed, he's just being seen as he really is. Everything about his morals and principle was a facade to satiate his narcissism.

@@maaz322 I never said he was a good man, only that he tried to be one (as good as an outlaw can be at least). He certainly is a bad character with questionable morals but the important thing is that he tried for years to fight his evil nature deep down knowing it to be a losing/uphill battle

@@lechethefarmer9823 He acted good whenever it suited him, but when things got desperate, he was quick to shed morals with pure treachery. Maybe he realized that he was innately a monster when he committed suicide, but I think he was manipulative and narcissistic throughout the entire journey-- an attribute of most charismatic cult leaders. I believe he held his 'principles' high to feel self-righteous and be above petty thieves, permitting him to do actual good deeds for satisfaction , but when things hit rock bottom, he resorted to his fundamental nature, which was vengeance, hatred, and survival over loyalty.

@@maaz322 to assume everything was a facade is based on pretty loose ground. There are a lot of examples of Dutch doing good when it wasn't required. They gave to the poor, he yelled at Arthur for robbing a poor man, he yells at Arthur whenever he kills civilians in missions, he saved Sadie from Micah having no knowledge of how useful she would be, he takes care of a bunch of (let's be honest) useless people at camp, he tries to make peace with colm even though he killed a woman Dutch loved, etc. I think you're moving to an absolute judgment of his character too quickly but that's just me.

@@lechethefarmer9823 Self righteousness is often utilized by narcissists to perceive themselves as noble or superior, but it does indeed benefit others in the end. However, it's essentially a self-serving pursuit. Dutch's principle's and morals were just a way to glorify and justify his crime and appear above the petty criminals. When conditions were ideal, Dutch readily employed his principles, but quickly deserted them when desperation hit and their gang fell from its high perch. There you see him killing O'Driscol and orchestrating several risky robberies to satiate his ego, which was utterly scarred from the incident at Blackwater. "Tahiti" was merely a visionary 'haven' utilized to keep others faithful to him, much like an afterlife that cult leaders would promote. His followers showed more adhesion to HIS principles than he did! I'm not saying he does good just because there's something in it for him, but moreso it was all an agenda to appease his narcissism. Sadie mentioned to Arthur that Dutch changed from the man that rescued her and Arthur, but Arthur said that Dutch was merely being the man he always was.
