Eyes
The Eleven Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Downed by the weight of all
The years of big decision
Green checks and credit cards
In the way of the one big mission
The fake walls are closing in
As they say once again that they "still got time"
The hope is gone but they're just fine
Cause they can just buy their peace of mind
Years go by, and you come along
On track to sing the same old song
Want to be told which road to take
But you just get told there's no room for mistake
No room for every soul
But you don't believe in the rock 'n roll
Don't get caught in the blackhole
And the shine in your eyes will carry on
Surrendered dreams are the symptoms of a broken mind
Life under a lens isn't all by design
Black strips of old cover eyes of gold
Surrendered dreams are the symptoms of a broken mind
Life under a lens isn't all by design
Black strips of old cover eyes of gold
What they don't see they don't know

Life isn't played out like a game show
Your mastery doesn't always come out as a mystery

Overall Meaning

The first verse of The Eleven's song "Eyes" speaks about the act of falling, but in a figurative sense. The song is about one's desire to conform and be accepted by society, but realizing that, in doing so, they have lost themselves in the process. The act of falling is a metaphor for relinquishing control or authority, and the list of reasons for doing so--"to bleed", "to make them all believe", "to suffer"--underscores the idea that the person has chosen to give up their own autonomy in order to fit in. The last line--"The meaning is so meaningless"--hints at the realization that, in the end, conforming only brings emptiness and lack of purpose.

The chorus of "Eyes" repeats the line "You are nowhere" twice, which emphasizes the central theme of the song: the feeling of being lost or forgotten in the process of trying to conform. The second line--"in your effort to be permanently down"--implies that the person has intentionally withdrawn from society in order to avoid judgement or scrutiny. But this retreat has led to a sense of isolation and meaninglessness. The last line--"Search for the defining sound within a sound"--might be interpreted as a quest for individuality amidst conformity.

The second verse continues with the same themes, but adds a darker element. The lines "Fall to silence" and "Fall to grace" suggest that the person has become passive and unresponsive to their own desires. The next line--"See them clutching your embrace"--hints that the person may have become a victim to those who they once sought to please. The image of "project[ing] themselves on you" emphasizes the idea that others may see us as reflections of themselves, rather than as individuals with our own distinct personalities.

Born and raised in these hollow days
I'm sick, I'm tired
Empty skulls run this place
The world isn't working anymore
The world isn't working at all
Born and raised in these hollow days
Empty skulls, black holes, white eyes, run this place
Close your eyes, just pretend that I'm your friend
Look out for yourself because there is no-one else
Your life must be so fucking easy
Living with your (eyes (closed) minds) never stop believing
What they see through their empty skulls
Give me something real
Find me, somebody who feels
Different
I'm not the same
I pray to God
I pray to anyone
I don't believe it anyway

The original singer was such a good screamer. He was the BEST vocalist in any hardcore band. He was part of what made heights unique.
