I'm so Lonesome I Could Cry
The Elvis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hear that lonesome winter bird
He sounds too blue to fly
The midnight train is whining low
I'm so lonesome I could cry

Did you ever see a robin weep
When leaves began to die
That means he's lost the will to live
I'm so lonesome I could cry

The silence of a falling star
Lights up a purple sky
And as I wonder where you are

I'm so lonesome I could cry
I'm so lonesome I could cry

Overall Meaning

In "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" by Elvis Presley, the lyrics reflect the overwhelming feeling of loneliness that one might experience when they miss someone dear. The song begins with an illustration of several objects making sounds that resemble the misery that the singer is feeling. For instance, the singer can hear a winter bird that is too sad to fly, and the midnight train has a low and mournful cry. The lyrics suggest that the world is unhappy and wants the singer to feel the same way. The verse preceding the refrain, "I'm so lonesome I could cry," suggests that even animals feel lonely and sad, as seen in the robin's weeping when the leaves start to fall.

The chorus of the song, "I'm so lonesome I could cry," is a means of expressing the feelings of the singer. It suggests that the singer feels overwhelming loneliness to the point of tears. The final verse uses a falling star to illustrate the singer's emotions. While the star may be a beautiful sight, it merely reminds the singer of their loneliness as they wonder where their loved one is.

Overall, "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" is a song that perfectly captures feelings of desolation and loneliness. The lyrics are masterfully written and interpreted by Elvis Presley's enthralling voice. The song draws the listener into the singer's world, where one feels the profound pain of loneliness.

Broke:
He had so many health issues,
but even though he suffered he kept on singing to his fans.H always said it: If it wasn’t for his fans there would not be an
ELVIS!!!!!!!
That’s why even suffering he did all that for us his fans!!!!!!
Nothing SELFISH about him!!!!
I wish HE would still be among us, but my consolation is that he no longer is suffering!
Besides the suffering he wasn’t
a happy person. IMO, there are no Ifs and or Buts the manager that old bastard killed him!!!!!
I saw the movie yesterday.
The movie was too short, but it was excellent!!!!!
I was happy to see that they made it very clear of how the
old manager robbed Elvis blind, a lot of ppl think that there would not be an ELVIS if it wasn’t for the colonel, thank

God the movie showed it very clear they took the old man’s mask off

I think it's over the lyrics. Hank Williams Sr. was a genius at writing sad songs that get you right in the heart! Elvis does the song justice in every way.
