Jack in the Box
The Elysian Fields Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's been seven years now
Living in this box
Closed in on all sides
No light, just dark
He kept me under the bed
I'd pray for it to stop
He's lock me safely away
And lie on top
Pop the latches, open the hatches
Out comes Jack in the Box
Doing tricks and taking licks
Out comes Jack in the Box
I was an uncut marionette
Hanging by his steel cable thread
I was a shadow dancer
A thousand shakes of red
There's too much light, it's far too bright
I see things much too clearly
There's too much light, it's far too bright
Oh so weary
Pop the latches, open the hatches
Out comes Jack in the Box
Doing tricks and taking licks
Out comes Jack in the Box
If this is all of life outside
Please put me where I'm happy
Where I won't know what to think of this
Black and black, almost sleeping
Please lock me up
Shut me up
Shut up
Jack in the Box
Please lock me up

Shut me down
Jack in the Box

Overall Meaning

The first stanza of The Elysian Fields's song Jack In The Box describes a victim's experience of being trapped in a small, dark, and confined space for seven years. The person's abuser/keeper would lock them up under the bed and put his weight on top while the victim prayed for it to stop. The second stanza mentions the title of the song, as it describes the abuser's power to control and release the victim. The singer refers to themselves as an "uncut marionette," indicating that they are not in control of their own movements, but are being manipulated by external forces as if they were a lifeless puppet. The eerie and suggestive lyrics "a thousand shakes of red" give the impression that the singer sees red flashes of light when being manipulated by the abuser. The song ends with a haunting plea from the victim, wishing to be locked up and shut down like a Jack in the Box toy.

SULTRY, Jennifer Charles is. ☝️

@Catsetsfire

This song is actually referring to the kidnapping of Colleen Stan in 1977. She was convinced that she was a slave and kept in a box under the kidnapper's bed. Everyone refers to that case as "The Girl in the Box".

@lagunabeachrecovery2301

Thanks!
