Since September 2007 the Artistic Director is Harry Bicket.
Simon Standage was the first violin from 1972-1991; followed by Peter Hanson; followed by Rachel Podger; followed by Andrew Manze, who now directs from the violin.
The English Concert is among the worldβs most distinguished chamber orchestras. For more than thirty years it has been critically acclaimed in concert on four continents and in over 120 recordings of Baroque and Classical music.
Under Andrew Manzeβs leadership since 2003 the orchestra has built upon its outstanding reputation, attracting new audiences with a distinctive mixture of informality and serious musical aims, breathing new life into well-known masterpieces and little-known repertoire.
In the UK The English Concert continues to appear regularly at the major London venues, including the Wigmore Hall, Cadogan Hall and South Bank Centre, while featuring nationally at concert series in Bristol, Bedford and Southampton, and in an extensive touring programme with a South West regional focus. Among the many UK festivals visited by The English Concert are Bath, Salisbury and the BBC Proms.
The orchestra continues to be in great demand internationally, with annual tours of the USA since 2004 and their dΓ©but in Australia in 2005. In 2005-06 they visited Korea, Malaysia, Germany, Austria, Norway, Turkey, Poland, Switzerland and Hungary, in addition to the USA, while in 2006-07 they return to Belgium, Spain, the United States and make their dΓ©but at the Ansbach, Rheingau and Schleswig-Holstein festivals in Germany.
Among the worldβs most recorded orchestras, a new series of recordings with Andrew Manze for Harmonia Mundi USA has placed The English Concert once again at the top of the classical charts, with a Mozart CD Night Music, Vivaldiβs seven concertos βfor the Holy Roman Emperorβ and a landmark recording of the recently discovered Mass by Heinrich Biber, Missa Christi resurgentis. Their most recent release, Mozart Violin Concertos, has received critical plaudits, while their next, of C P E Bach orchestral works, is eagerly awaited.
The English Concert continues to provide a benchmark for the authoritative performance of Baroque and Classical music, both with its artistic director Andrew Manze and with the distinguished guest conductors and soloists with whom it works.
See Trevor Pinnock for a list of recordings made while he was the director.

@M S Bach said: "The main purpose of my music is to glorify God".
And he would pray: "Jesus, help me show your glory through the music I write".
He also wrote "SDG" ("Solo Dei Gloria" = to God alone be the Glory) at the bottom of every paper on which he composed.
God evidently blessed him and worked through him.
Keep seeking God and you will hear glorious music in Heaven, likely meet Bach there and be delivered from the fear of death now.
The name "Jesus" means "saviour" in the sense of "loosener", "rescuer" and "deliverer".
The New Testament tells us that He frees us from sin, guilt, shame, death, Satan, destructive habits, binding traumas and everything dark.
He is, after all, the "Light of the world" (John 8:12 & 9:5).
The more we seek, the more He reveals Himself. Because seeking is a sign of humility and faith (trust).
"But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him" (Hebrews 11:6).
I experienced that and it led to me understanding the Bible for the first time after spending 40 years as a head believer without the Holy Spirit (who "teaches and guides us into all Truth": Jesus's words in John 14:26 & 16:13).
I suggest starting with John's Gospel and then the other Gospels and the rest of the New Testament (and then the Old Testament because it foreshadows the New and can only be understood in light of it).
And don't give up.
God bless you. The one true God is good and loves you.
We can only be reconciled to Him through our repentance/His forgiveness and faith in Jesus (John 14:6, Romans 5:1).
It was no "coincidence" that I saw this comment!

Fun fact: In the episode "A Matter of Time" in Star Trek: TNG at around the 19:35 mark, the piece can be heard!

In my Personal opinion, a favorite amongst the Viola's and Bassists.

All my life I loved J S Bach, but I never imagined that one day I would be listening to a Brandenburg concerto whilst sitting in my apartment...in the state of Brandenburg!

Man, when that 3rd movement kicks in, it just kills me, every time. It gives me hope for humanity to know that someone could create something so beautiful. I get weepy just thinking about it. Perfect performance, thank you.
