The Essex Green Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You're coming down on me
Oooh, love
You've got to show me
Oooh, friend
You're getting on your way
Oooh, friend
What will you take?
And when I see you
It's not like before
And when I hear you
I just need more, I just need more
Oooh, you
Can you hear me?
Oooh, you
You can free me
The first stanza of The Essex Green's song Berlin talks about love and friendship, and how they affect the singer's life. The first two lines, "Oooh, love, you're coming down on me/Oooh, love, you've got to show me," suggest a romantic relationship where the singer is feeling overwhelmed by the love they are receiving and is asking for more proof of that love. The next two lines, "Oooh, friend, you're getting on your way/Oooh, friend, what will you take?" seem to refer to a friendship that is changing or evolving, and the singer is curious or worried about what their friend will take away from the relationship.
The second stanza, "And when I see you, it's not like before/And when I hear you, I just need more, I just need more" further reflects the idea that relationships change over time. The singer is acknowledging that things are different now when they see or hear from someone they once knew, but they still feel a strong desire for more. The last two lines, "Oooh, you, can you hear me?/Oooh, you, you can free me," suggest that the singer is addressing one specific person who has the power to either imprison or liberate them, depending on how they respond. It is unclear whether this is a romantic partner or a friend.
Overall, the song seems to be about the complexities of relationships and how they can shift over time. The lyrics reflect a mix of emotions - desire, uncertainty, hope, and possibly even fear - making it a nuanced and relatable song for anyone who has experienced the ups and downs of human connection.

Ain't no use in crying like the others
We're fools in need, fools to believe
We're all fools in need too foolish to believe

As I get back on my knees and say
Help me somebody
