What It´s Like
The Everlast Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The hair on his face is dirty, dread-locked, and full of mange
He asks a man for what he could spare, with shame in his eyes
"Get a job you fucking slob," is all he replies
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in his shoes
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to sing the blues
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Mary got pregnant from a kid named Tom that said he was in love
He said, "don't worry about a thing, baby doll I'm the man you've been dreaming of."
But three months later he say he won't date her or return her calls
And she swear, "god damn, if I find that man I'm cuttin' off his balls"
And then she heads for the clinic and she gets some static walking through the door
They call her a killer, and they call her a sinner and they call her a whore
God forbid you ever had to walk a mile in her shoes
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to choose
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
I've seen a rich man beg I've seen a good man sin
I've seen a tough man cry
I've seen a loser win and a sad man grin
I heard an honest man lie
I've seen the good side of bad and the downside of up
And everything between
I licked the silver spoon drank from the golden cup
And smoked the finest green
I stroked the fattest dimes at least a couple of times
Before I broke their heart
You know where it ends, yo, it usually depends on where you start
I knew this kid named Max who used to get fat stacks out on the corner with drugs
He liked to hang out late he liked to get shit-faced and keep the pace with thugs
Until late one night there was a big gun fight and max lost his head
He pulled out his chrome .45, talked some shit, and wound up dead
Now his wife and his kids are caught in the midst of all of this pain
You know it comes that way at least that's what they say when you play the game
God forbid you ever had to wake up to hear the news
'Cause then you really might know what it's like to have to lose
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like
Then you really might know what it's like to have to lose
The Everlast's song, "What It's Like" is a poignant and emotional reminder of the struggles that people face in their daily lives. The song tells four different stories of individuals who are facing difficult and heartbreaking situations. In each verse, the lyrics focus on a different protagonist facing a unique but equally challenging predicament. The first verse tells the story of a homeless man outside of a liquor store, begging for change. The second verse is about a woman named Mary who's dealing with being pregnant from a man who abandoned her. The third verse talks about the various experiences the singer has encountered from living a life of privilege and also of poor choices. The fourth and final verse is about a drug dealer named Max who lost his life in a violent encounter.
The chorus, "Then you really might know what it's like," serves as a reminder that unless you have been in someone else's shoes, you cannot understand the pain and the struggles they face. The song aims to humanize the individuals in these situations, to offer a moment of reflection and empathy towards those who need it the most. It's a powerful message that transcends the boundaries of the individual stories and speaks to the universality of human suffering.

12years ago ended up homeless
slept on a piece of cardboard in a vacant field every night spent half the day or more (flying a sign) to get enough money for a nik of weed and a 4 pack of naty ice
spent the rest of the day getting wasted just to ease the pain
spent 4 years doin that
had enough started to reach out to get help
spent another 4yrs finding out how fu@ked up and dysfunctional the homeless support system is
got off my ass and started my own (program)
spent another 4yrs working my Program
and with a little help from the good lord above
got pre approved for a home loan today
around july of next year I be moving out of my shitty overpriced Apt in da hood

This song came out when I was 19. I am now 43 and have lived every word of this song. Don't ever judge someone, you have no idea the burdens they are carrying. Be kind. To others and to yourself.
@HipHopCantSaveMe
I just posted almost the same thing.
We were young and dumb 25 years ago.
Now we are grown up and this song hits too close to home.
Many died from drug addictions, suicide, etc.
It's a crazy world 🌏
