They began writing and recording their own music in 1956, and their first hit song came in 1957, with "Bye Bye Love", written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant. The song hit No. 1 in the spring of 1957, and additional hits would follow through 1958, many of them written by the Bryants, including "Wake Up Little Susie", "All I Have to Do Is Dream", and "Problems". In 1960, they signed with the major label Warner Bros. Records and recorded "Cathy's Clown", written by the brothers themselves, which was their biggest selling single. The brothers enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve in 1961, and their output dropped off, though additional hit singles continued through 1962, with "That's Old Fashioned (That's the Way Love Should Be)" being their last top-10 hit.
Long-simmering disputes with Wesley Rose, the CEO of Acuff-Rose Music, which managed the group, a growing drug usage in the 1960s, as well as changing tastes in popular music, led to the group's decline in popularity in its native U.S., though the brothers continued to release hit singles in the U.K. and Canada, and had many highly successful tours throughout the 1960s. In the early 1970s, the brothers began releasing solo recordings, and in 1973 they officially broke up. Starting in 1983, the brothers got back together, and would continue to perform periodically until Phil's death in 2014. Don died seven years later.
The group was highly influential on the music of the generation that followed it. Many of the top acts of the 1960s were heavily influenced by the close-harmony singing and acoustic guitar playing of the Everly Brothers, including the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Bee Gees, and Simon & Garfunkel. In 2015, Rolling Stone ranked the Everly Brothers No. 1 on its list of the 20 Greatest Duos of All Time. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of the inaugural class of 1986, and into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001. Don was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in 2019, earning the organization's first Iconic Riff Award for his distinctive rhythm guitar intro to the Everlys' massive 1957 hit "Wake Up Little Susie".

Crying in the Rain
The Everly Brothers Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The way my broken heart is hurting me
I've got my pride and I know how to hide
All the sorrow and pain
I'll do my crying in the rain
If I wait for cloudy skies
You won't know the rain from the tears in my eyes
So though the heartaches remain
I'll do my crying in the rain
Raindrops falling from heaven
Could never wash away my misery
But since we're not together
I'll look for stormy weather
To hide these tears I hope you'll never see
Someday when my crying's done
I'm gonna wear a smile and walk in the sun
I may be a fool
But till then, darling, you'll never see me complain
I'll do my crying in the rain
I'll do my crying in the rain
I'll do my crying in the rain
The song "Crying in the Rain" by The Everly Brothers talks about the heartbreak that comes after a separation. The singer expresses that they will not show their broken heart to their former lover, and instead, they will cry in the rain, where nobody can see them. They maintain their pride and hide their sorrow, which they have learned to do well. They don't want their ex-lover to see that they are still in love with them despite the heartaches they are going through.
The song's lyrics use the metaphor of rain to describe the singer's tears and sadness. The rain represents a place where the singer can hide their tears, and nobody can tell whether it's tears or raindrops falling. The lyrics also express the hope that someday the singer will stop crying and find joy again. The last lines of the song reflect that the singer will keep their pain to themselves and not complain about it to anyone, so their former lovers will never know the depth of their emotions.
Overall, "Crying in the Rain" is a melancholic and introspective song that shows the struggle of heartbreak and the power of hiding one's pain from the world.

I'll never let you see
I won't show you how much I'm hurting
The way my broken heart is hurting me
I am in emotional pain because of you
I've got my pride and I know how to hide
I have self-respect and I can keep my feelings to myself
All the sorrow and pain
I am experiencing great emotional distress
I'll do my crying in the rain
I will express my sadness and tears alone
If I wait for cloudy skies
If I wait for things to get worse
You won't know the rain from the tears in my eyes
You won't be able to tell that I am crying
You'll never know that I still love you
You'll remain unaware of my continued affection for you
So though the heartaches remain
Despite the pain I experience
I'll do my crying in the rain
I'll cry alone, where no one can see me
Raindrops falling from heaven
Rainfall from the sky
Could never wash away my misery
No amount of rain can cure my sadness
But since we're not together
Since we are no longer together
I'll look for stormy weather
I'll seek out a harsher climate
To hide these tears I hope you'll never see
To conceal my tears from you
Someday when my crying's done
One day, when I've cried enough
I'm gonna wear a smile and walk in the sun
I will put on a happy face and enjoy life
I may be a fool
I may be naive
But till then, darling, you'll never see me complain
But until that time, you won't hear me complain
I'll do my crying in the rain
I'll keep my sadness hidden from you and cry alone
I'll do my crying in the rain
I'll keep my sadness hidden from you and cry alone
I'll do my crying in the rain
I'll keep my sadness hidden from you and cry alone
