Sports
The Ex Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We like to spend a lot of money
On supporting sports
Besides it realizes more
Than television-spots
We don't need no racers that
Really are the best
Their entry's our publicity
We don't care 'bout the rest
When racing fast it's easy enough
To make a wrong decision

But just be sure that when you crash
You're on television

Overall Meaning

In the song "Sports," The Ex critiques the capitalist and consumerist culture surrounding professional sports. The band highlights the ways in which people spend exorbitant amounts of money supporting sports teams and players, and how this money contributes to the culture of celebrity that surrounds athletes. This culture values winning over sportsmanship or skill, as evidenced by the lyrics, "We don't need no racers that really are the best / Their entry's our publicity / We don't care 'bout the rest." The Ex is suggesting that the athletes themselves, and their accomplishments, are secondary to the marketing and media surrounding sports events.

The Ex also calls attention to the fact that sports events are heavily mediated and influenced by technology. As the lyrics say, "Besides it realizes more / Than television-spots." In other words, the financial gains from sports events are greater than those from simply broadcasting them on TV. The band also comments on the dangers of extreme sports, implying that athletes are taking needless risks in the pursuit of fame and fortune, and that they are sacrificing their own health and safety for the sake of spectacle. The line "But just be sure that when you crash / You're on television" underscores this idea.

Overall, The Ex's "Sports" is a critical look at the ways in which sports have been commodified and turned into a form of entertainment that values money, fame, and spectacle over skill, sportsmanship, and personal fulfillment.

Great vid. I don’t get why seadoo doesn’t make a re-boarding step standard across all its models. I know the Ex’s step is small but at least it’s something

Because they can charge $230 extra for it as an accessory!

I have that same ski. It’s great all around. No lag out of the hole, plenty of power and the right size to toss around and jump waves. I installed a Riva ride plate and EXR intake and it’s way better. Seeing around 53 mph or so. Obviously not a racer but tons of fun. Take a look at my screen name. Took a breather from Sea-Doo and I’m quite happy I did at the moment. Sea-Doo does make a great ski but the one I had was a problem. One last thing to remember, Yamaha always under tunes their motors. A simple tune will bump the RPMs up another six or 700 RPMs. That would mean more acceleration and more top speed.

@Dave R I own a Spark as well and there’s lots of product support but most of the products do almost nothing performance wise. Lots of fluff. All you have to do is the mods I mentioned above in my post. Although I have not done the tune or impeller. But I know somebody that has. Waiting for my warranty to expire. But the intake grate and ride plate Improves things a lot.

Oh I love the Ski my problem is no product support coupled with POOR customer service.

@The Watercraft Journal is that the whole stage 1 “ package “ that Riva offers? I think it’s like $1800. Is there a cheaper way to get more power or is the package the only way to go to get more power. Thanks 🙏

Seadoo4life

@The Watercraft Journal That’s right! I hear it makes a huge difference

The Watercraft Journal

RIVA has a Stage 1 reflash that really opens up the TR-1 engine (130hp we believe).
