Ugly
The Exies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Are you ugly?
A liar like me?
A user, a lost soul?
Someone you don't know?
Money, it's no cure
A sickness so pure
Are you like me?
Are you ugly?

We are dirt
We are alone
You know we're far from ?sober?
We are fake
We are afraid
You know it's far from over
We are dirt
We are alone
You know we're far from ?sober?
Look closer
Are you like me?
Are you ugly?

Turn a blind eye
Why do I deny?
Medicate me
So I die happy
A strain of cancer
Chokes the answers
Are you like me?
A liar like me?

We are dirt
We are alone
You know we're far from ?sober?
We are fake
We are afraid
You know it's far from over
We are dirt
We are alone
You know we're far from ?sober?
Look closer
Are you like me?
Are you ugly?

I don't care
You don't care
I do know
You're angry
You don't care
I don't care
Who are you?
Just like me?
Am I you?
You are me
I do know
You're angry
You don't care
I don't care
Who are you?
Like me?

We are dirt
We are alone
You know we're far from ?sober?
We are fake
We are afraid
You know it's far from over
We are dirt
We are alone
You know we're far from ?sober?
Look closer

Are you like me?
Are you ugly?

Overall Meaning

The Exies' song Ugly is a commentary on the darker side of human nature, touching on themes of isolation, addiction, and fear. The lyrics suggest that the singer is grappling with feelings of unworthiness and self-doubt, which they project onto the world around them. The chorus asks the listener a provocative question: "Are you like me? Are you ugly?" The lyrics seem to imply that everyone carries some hidden darkness within them, and that true connection and understanding can only come from acknowledging and confronting that reality.

The verses paint a bleak picture of a life lived in the grips of addiction and self-destruction. The lines "Money, it's no cure, a sickness so pure" suggest that the pursuit of material wealth is a hollow and ultimately futile endeavor. The repeated refrain of "We are dirt, we are alone" highlights the singer's sense of isolation and disconnection from the world around them. The bridge takes a pointed jab at the culture of denial that often accompanies addiction, with the line "Turn a blind eye, why do I deny?" suggesting that the singer is aware of their own destructive behavior but is unable or unwilling to change it.

WWE Survivor Series Feature Album at a time the industry was hitting new levels as the newly minted WWE.

There was a lot of great albums out with bands that toured North America .
The Exies a California based band toured only in area's they were established like Juggalo's do.
They didnt market themselves or promote themselves as even Serial Joe toured heavier then The Exies which for all intensive purposes was a warm weather band who largely did Studio performance's

I mean if they had Nickleback and Theory of a Deadman's Agent's then maybe they woulda been bigger as the reason those 2 bands grew was Nickelback's non stop touring , drinking and giving away more beer then they drank. aka The Rise Against approach to gaining fame while touring.

Their manager just let them stay in their comfort zone never pushing them like Prozak which was big in Canada in the late 1990s early 2000s with a vibe that fit the time . But the 2 artists in it had dueling philosophies and still do so touring is only done locally no more then a 10 hour drive away from one of the Artist's home. While 1 wants to go mainstream and grow the other was perfectly happy tying any rise they'd have coming off Much Music in their home province. Its wasnt just them either as Love Inc was out and dominate during the rise for Darude and Daft Punk in Quebec but was pushed out early again becuase of strife within the band and their goals being less important then their comfort zone.

Honestly if not for WWE's national broadcast that too many countries outside them watch to list, i probably wouldnt have ever heard of The Exies based on their inability to Tour Internationally .
