Soldier
The Exit Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm a soldier,and I walk these streets on guard.
Where I'm going, I can't say that I'm sure.
But I've been so down, ain't seeing many clear days.

I seen a war. I seen the headlines
fall from the sky just like the rain.

She said, "Baby, you believe there is a god?"
And I said,"Maybe lately I don't believe in much of anything at all."
Though you know me, you may not know
what's on my mind.

I seen a war. I seen the headlines
fall from the sky just like the rain.

Orddinary people underneath the sun.
I believe we're equal. I believe we're one.
I seen a war. I seen the headlines
fall from the sky just like the rain.

I seen a war. I seen the headlines
fall from the sky just like the planes hit.

Overall Meaning

The song Soldier by The Exit is a powerful reflection on war and its aftermath. The singer identifies himself as a soldier, constantly on guard as he walks through the streets. He is uncertain about where he is going, and his pessimistic outlook is reflected in the line "But I've been so down, ain't seeing many clear days." The phrase "seeing many clear days" suggests a lack of hope and a foggy mental state.

The chorus of the song centers around the singer's experiences of war and the images that have stuck with him. "I seen a war. I seen the headlines fall from the sky just like the rain" creates a stark image of the destruction and death that war brings. The verse that follows details a conversation between the singer and a woman who asks if he believes in God. He responds with doubt and resignation, saying that he doesn't believe in much of anything anymore. The line "though you know me, you may not know what's on my mind" suggests that the singer is carrying the weight of his experiences alone, despite having people around him.

In the final chorus, the singer emphasizes his belief in the equality of humanity, regardless of background or circumstance. However, the repetition of "I seen a war" and the addition of "fall from the sky just like the planes hit" shifts the focus back to the brutality of war and the lasting effects it has on those who have experienced it.

Overall, Soldier is a sobering and thought-provoking song that explores the impact of war on personal beliefs and mental states.

You got holes in your jeans
and few in your heart
You don’t know what it means to me, to watch you fall apart
Cause your broken and bruised, but I can hold you close.
I’ll take you in my arms tonight, just me and you.

Baby in a heart beat,
I’ll take you with me
I just wanna get to know you
You’re throwing me off beat
So I can’t breathe
I just wanna get to show you
If we’re falling apart
I will fight for your heart
I can be your shield
I will fight on the field
Baby when our life gets colder
I’ll be your soldier.
Na na na na na
I’ll be your soldier
Na na na na na

Just put up your arms, you’ll be alright.
Cause the world is like a battlefield, that I’ll be here to fight.
I see the scars and your wounds, I’ll try to heal them to.
I’ll take you in my arms tonight, just me and you.

Baby in a heart beat
I’ll take you with me
I just wanna get to know you
You’re throwing me off beat
So I can’t breathe,
I just wanna get to show you
If we’re falling apart
I will fight for your heart
I can be your shield
I will fight on the field
Baby when our life gets colder
I’ll be your soldier
Na na na na na
I’ll be your soldier
Na na na na na

When you’re feeling low, I can take you higher.
When the world is cold, I’ll be your fire.
I’ll be there, when you need a shoulder
We can win this war,
I will be your soldier.

Cause,
Baby in a heart beat
I’ll take you with me
I just wanna get to know you
You’re throwing me off beat
So I can’t breathe,
I just wanna get to show you
If we’re falling apart
I will fight for your heart
I can be your shield
I will fight on the field
Baby when our life gets colder
I’ll be your soldier
Na na na na na
I’ll be your soldier
Na na na na na

What you do is more than music. You touch people's lives from far away. My sister loved this song. She lost her battle with cancer but her hope never died. She left but is not gone. This is the first time I heard the song. My niece just met you guys this weekend and I can understand why your group means so much to her. Thank you! Don't ever change and remember you touch lives with every word you sing. God bless you always.
