Battle Hymn of the Republic
The Exotic Guitars Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord;
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword;
His truth is marching on.

Sing it!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is shifting out the hearts of men before His judgment seat;
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet;
Our God is marching on.

Sing it!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Our God is marching on.

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free;
While God is marching on.

Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

Overall Meaning

The Battle Hymn of the Republic is a patriotic hymn with strong religious and military themes. It is a song that speaks to the glory of God's coming and the triumph of righteousness in the face of evil. The opening verse speaks of the coming of the Lord who will trample the grapes of wrath and wield his terrible swift sword. This language is a reference to the book of Revelation and is speaking of the Day of Judgment when all will be made right.

The chorus repeats the phrase "Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!" which is a common theme throughout the hymn. The phrase is a way of expressing gratitude and praise to God for his power and glory. The second verse speaks of the trumpet that shall never call retreat and of the hearts of men being shifted before the judgment seat. This is a call to arms for Christians to be ready for the coming of the Lord and to live lives of jubilance and devotion.

The final verse speaks of the birth of Christ and his sacrifice on the cross to make men holy. It is a call to action for believers to strive to make men free as Christ did. The hymn ends with the repetition of "Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!" as a way of expressing the ultimate victory of God's truth marching on.
