Dance Dance Dance
The Fables Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I loved you once, I loved you twice
You had me three times, four times was nice
I hate you every single time that I still think of you and that's ok
It's okay, It's okay, It's okay
I'm okay, okay, okay
There was that first time I saw you and I didn't know you
And all of a sudden I was in love with
One that I saw right in front of me standing
Now it's six months and we're both here just dancing
Love you, goodbye to you, I'm done with you, our dance is done
Our dance is done, our dance is done
Day two, I wanted to ask you to be my girl
But you, had other things in mind worked out in the world
The other guy, made me cry, you said there was nothing to worry about
Now I'm, alone and cry, you were the one to kick me out
I'm dying, trying, crying poems with you
And I, I, I'm sick of trying, I'm sick of dying

Love you, goodbye to you, I'm done with you, our dance is done
Our dance is done, our dance is done, our dance is done, our dance is done

Overall Meaning

The Fables' song "Dance Dance Dance" is a melancholic portrayal of a relationship that has ended. The lyrics depict a sequence of emotions and events that the singer went through. The song begins by conveying the sentiment of having once loved the person they are singing to, twice, thrice, and even a fourth time. But now all that love has turned into hatred, and the singer is left reminiscing about the times they spent with their former lover. However, the singer comes to the realization that it is okay to think of them once in a while and feel emotions, even if the sentiment is not one of fondness but hate.

The lyrics then take us back to the first time the singer saw the love interest, and they fell deeply in love with them. Consequently, time flew by, and it has now been six months, and they find themselves dancing together. However, we quickly come to know that by day two, the singer wanted to ask the love interest to be their girl, but they had other intentions. Furthermore, the presence of another guy who eventually makes the singer cry while the love interest dismisses the matter leads to a break-up. The pain that the singer feels is evident in the lines, "I'm dying, trying, crying poems with you, and I, I, I'm sick of trying, I'm sick of dying." Finally, the singer declares their love and says goodbye, acknowledging that their dance is done.
