Desire
The Family Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So long have we known each other (So long have we known each other)
So little do we know (Little do we know)
Sometimes I feel like strangers (Sometimes I feel like strangers)
The real us we seldom do show (Seldom do show)

CHORUS:
Desire, it covers our faces
It happens in curious places
Your body, it covers my tower
Ecstasy is ours

I dream of a physical evening (Dream of a physical evening {x3})
I long 4 a night within U
U're saving your love 4 some soldier (Some soldier {x3})
Who'd much rather die than stay by your side
If U only knew

CHORUS

A ghost from your past
Prevents us from knowing the pleasures of love
What must I do 2 convince U
Isn't the expression on my complexion enough?
(Ecstasy)

Don't tell me we have conflicting emotions
It's written all over your face
Come my love, cover my tower
Ecstasy is ours

So long have we known each other (So long have we known each other)
So little do we know
Let me show U

CHORUS {x3}

Overall Meaning

The Family's song Desire is about a couple who have known each other for a long time, but still feel like strangers as they seldom reveal their true selves to each other. The song explores the theme of desire and how it manifests itself in curious places, covering their faces and bodies with ecstasy. The first verse sets the stage for the rest of the song, as the couple's relationship is characterized by a lack of true intimacy. The chorus emphasizes the theme of desire, suggesting that it is often hidden or masked, but still present and powerful.

The second verse introduces a longing for physical intimacy on the part of one of the partners, who dreams of a night spent together. However, their desire is frustrated by the fact that the other partner is saving their love for someone else, someone who would rather die than stay by their side. The third verse reveals that this is due to a ghost from the other partner's past, who is preventing the couple from fully knowing the pleasures of love. The song ends with a plea for the other partner to let go of their conflicting emotions and join in the ecstasy that is already theirs.

Overall, Desire is a song about the complex and often hidden emotions of desire, and the ways in which they can both bring people together and drive them apart. It speaks to the universal human longing for intimacy and the difficulties that can arise when past traumas or conflicting emotions get in the way.

This was my secret song that nobody knew much about for soooo many years. I would play this song to death, then resurrect it and play it to death again. This song feels so romantic and special. Many people still don't know this song, and even more tragic, don't know The Family. I tell you Prince had something here, that for whatever the reason, he didn't take it further.

On paper, St. Paul left so he couldn't take it further. Once he was gone, Prince lost interest.

The late ‘80s were a HELL of a creative and prolific period for the great man Prince.

95% of the best came before Graffiti Bridge. I could listen to every album before then over and over. (Except batman)
