Glenn Mercer and Bill Million formed the band as The Outkids in 1976, and changed their name to The Feelies later that year. The band moved to New York and began receiving critical acclaim for their performances. By the 1978, the band consisted of Mercer, Million, basist Keith DeNunzio and drummer Anton Fier. The band released their debut single "Fa Cé-La", on Rough Trade Records in 1979.
In 1980, the band released their debut album, "Crazy Rhythms" on Stiff Records. Fier and DeNunzio left the band shortly after the release of the album, and the band was put on hiatus as Mercer and Million pursued other projects. The two continued to occasionally perform with other musicians as The Feelies throughout the early 1980's.
The band reformed in 1985 with a lineup consisting of Million, Mercer, Dave Wackerman, Brenda Sauter and Stan Demeski and released "The Good Earth" in 1986. The album was co-produced by R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck. The Feelies toured with Lou Reed and R.E.M. during 1986.
In 1988, the band released "Only Life" on A&M Records, and in 1991, released "Time for a Witness" on the same label. The band disbanded in 1992.
The band reunited in 2008 and toured with Sonic Youth, before beginning a schedule of festival dates throughout 2009 and 2010. The band released their fifth album, "Here Before", on Bar/None Records in 2011.

The Feelies Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Causing a commotion
Driving me away
Driving me backwards
Baby's getting uptight
Listen to her holler
Listen to her heartbeat
Really getting louder
Burning with desire
Taking me higher
Taking me away
Set me on fire
Messing my mind up
Blowing my mind out
Blowing me away
Taking me away
Away
Going round in circles
Here we go again
Really going nowhere
Really going nowhere
Now we're really in deep
Now we're really in deep
Blowing me away
Taking me away
Away
The Feelies's song "Away" is a song about being caught in a cycle with someone who is a disruption in your life. The song begins by setting the scene: the singer is in a crowded room and someone in the corner is causing a commotion, driving them away. The lyrics repeat that the person driving the singer away is taking them higher and setting them on fire but also messing their mind up and blowing their mind out. This person is a contradiction, causing both excitement and discomfort. The chorus repeats the theme of being taken away and blown away.
The second verse adds more frustration to this cycle. The singer feels like they are going round in circles and going nowhere. However, they are unable to break free from this cycle and are getting deeper into the situation. Despite this, they are still being blown away and taken away.
The song's lyrics are vague enough to apply to a variety of situations, but overall it is about being caught up with someone who both excites and frustrates you. The driving beat and repetitive nature of the lyrics reinforce the cyclical nature of the situation. Overall, "Away" is a relatable song for anyone who has been caught in a cycle with someone.

That album also got me hooked on them. It's my favorite of theirs and I saw them open for Lou Reed during this period and also headline a show in a small club.
