Stylisticly, The Feeling have a debt of gratitude to the 70s, particularly bands such as 10cc, Supertramp, Pilot, Buggles, Queen, Stackridge, and other "progressive pop" acts. They are not averse to wearing their heart on their sleeve at gigs, playing covers of tunes by their favourite artists (such as 'Video Killed The Radio Star' by Buggles).
The Feeling have also followed the 'progressive' tradition of the concept album, with Twelve Stops and Home being a concept album about lost and unrequited love. The album starts with a relationship having just broken up, then follows through with the various emotions of the protagonist from hopeless dreamer to turning to drink for comfort, and finally slumping home.

The Feeling Lyrics

I haven't seen one of them in a while
'Cause these days, I'm such a bore
I mope around
Like I seen it all before, but something has changed, I used to be an open heart
What have you done to me
It could have been anyone, it could have been anyone
But it wasn't you and it wasn't him, it was me who felt like a fool right then
And I won't be the only one
It could have been anyone, yes it could
Yeah, yeah
When the hell did you get so wise
Foiled again by attempts to disguise
Do you recall the day we kissed
Upon the curb, surrounded by the mist
I gave you my world, to tear apart
Another fool, another broken heart
It could have been anyone, it could have been anyone
It could have been anyone, it could have been anyone
But it wasn't you and it wasn't him, it was me who felt like a fool right then
And I won't be the only one
It could have been anyone
I know doing it again, it's out of line
Trying to catch a fish down the line
I know doing it again, I must be blind
I'm doing it again
I'm doing it again
It could have been anyone, it could have been anyone
It could have been anyone, It could have been anyone
But it wasn't you and it wasn't him, it was me who felt like a fool right then
And I can't be the only one
It could have been anyone
The Feeling's song "Anyone" is about the feeling of falling in love with someone unexpectedly and experiencing a complete change in one's emotions. The song is written from the perspective of the singer who has become jaded and depressed by life's experiences, only to meet someone who completely changes their perspective. The lyrics use vivid imagery to describe the change in the singer's mental state, such as "Where the hell did you get that smile/I haven't seen one of them in a while." The singer is surprised by their own emotional response to the relationship, "What have you done to me?"
The song also explores the idea of missed connections and the possibility of what could have been. The lyrics state, "It could have been anyone, it could have been anyone/But it wasn't you and it wasn't him, it was me who felt like a fool right then." The singer is acknowledging that they could have fallen in love with anyone, but the fact that it was this particular person is significant. The chorus repeats the line "It could have been anyone" as a reminder that the relationship could have gone in any direction and that there is always a possibility for missed opportunities.
Overall, the song is a reflection on the power of love to change a person's outlook on life and the possibility of missed connections. The lyrics use vivid imagery and repetition to drive home the idea that falling in love is an unpredictable and powerful force.
