Stylisticly, The Feeling have a debt of gratitude to the 70s, particularly bands such as 10cc, Supertramp, Pilot, Buggles, Queen, Stackridge, and other "progressive pop" acts. They are not averse to wearing their heart on their sleeve at gigs, playing covers of tunes by their favourite artists (such as 'Video Killed The Radio Star' by Buggles).
The Feeling have also followed the 'progressive' tradition of the concept album, with Twelve Stops and Home being a concept album about lost and unrequited love. The album starts with a relationship having just broken up, then follows through with the various emotions of the protagonist from hopeless dreamer to turning to drink for comfort, and finally slumping home.
Never Be Lonely
The Feeling Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
People in love get everything wrong
People in love get scared and stupid
People in love get everything wrong
[Chorus]
At least they're not lonely
At least they're not lonely
B-b-b-b-b-b-b-baby
I think I'm going c-c-c-crazy
Why should I be sane without you?
They tell me to fight it
But they can bloody well just try it
I'll never be the same without you
People in love get special treatment
People in love get everything wrong
People in love, their hearts get eaten
And people in love get everything wrong
[Chorus]
Never be lonely
The first stanza of the song “Never Be Lonely” by The Feeling talks about people who are in love and how they seem to make bad decisions in their lives. The lyrics suggest that love can sometimes make people act irrationally, leading to poor decision making, fear, and stupidity. This view of love as a force that can cause chaos and confusion is primarily based on personal experience.
The second stanza of the song is a declaration of how love has affected the songwriter. The lyrics suggest that the songwriter is going crazy without their lover and that life makes no sense without them. This sudden obsession with their lover hints at how love can make people lose their sense of self and become dependent on their partner.
The chorus of the song reassures the singer that they will never be lonely, implying that their lover will always be there to comfort them. The repetition of the phrase 'never be lonely' reflects a desire to be with the lover to avoid loneliness, which is a consequence of a lack of love.
Overall, the lyrics of the song talk about how love can turn people's world upside down and sometimes lead to foolishness and confusion. Nevertheless, love is a necessary emotion that helps individuals thrive.
