Stylisticly, The Feeling have a debt of gratitude to the 70s, particularly bands such as 10cc, Supertramp, Pilot, Buggles, Queen, Stackridge, and other "progressive pop" acts. They are not averse to wearing their heart on their sleeve at gigs, playing covers of tunes by their favourite artists (such as 'Video Killed The Radio Star' by Buggles).
The Feeling have also followed the 'progressive' tradition of the concept album, with Twelve Stops and Home being a concept album about lost and unrequited love. The album starts with a relationship having just broken up, then follows through with the various emotions of the protagonist from hopeless dreamer to turning to drink for comfort, and finally slumping home.

Those were the days
Your mother would say you could come out to play
We'd kick things around
Climb up a tree or jump across the canal
Then every summer was a year in my head
When it ended, yeah, we wished we were dead
But nowadays it comes and goes before you've noticed
We've nothing left to lose
(The sun is shining)
Put on your favourite shoes
(We're getting tired and I'm)
Sick of waiting for you
Waiting for you
I've gotta move on
But my heart belongs in a world that is gone
I went to your house
Your mother's still there but she said you moved out
She said you left eleven years ago
She says she's told me this before but I don't know
She won't understand if I say how I love you
(The sun is shining)
We've nothing left to lose
(The sun is shining)
Put on your favourite shoes
(We're getting tired and I'm)
Sick of waiting for you
Waiting for you
(The sun is shining)
It's gonna be alright
(The sun is shining)
Stop putting up a fight
(I'm getting high so high)
We've got nothing to lose
Nothing to lose
(The sun is shining)
We've got nothing to lose
(The sun is shining)
Put on your favourite shoes
(We're getting tired and I'm)
Sick of waiting for you
Waiting for you
(The sun is shining)
Stop putting up a fight
(The sun is shining)
It's gonna be alright
(I'm getting high so high)
We've got nothing to lose
Nothing to lose
The Feeling's song "Sun Is Shining" centers around the theme of nostalgia and loss. The lyrics talk about looking back on one's childhood and remembering those carefree days when everything seemed possible. The singer reminisces about how he used to play with his friends, climb trees, and jump across canals. He recalls the summers of his youth, which seemed to last forever, and how everything changed when they ended. Nowadays, time seems to fly by so quickly that he hardly notices it. Nevertheless, he still remembers those happy times fondly and wishes that he could go back to them.
The song also touches on the idea of unrequited love. The singer confesses that he still loves someone he knew from his childhood, but she has moved on in life, and he doesn't know how to reach her. He went to her house and talked to her mother, who revealed that she had left many years ago. The singer feels that nobody understands the depth of his feelings, and he longs to be with her again, even if it's only in his memories.
Overall, "Sun Is Shining" is a bittersweet song that captures the feeling of looking back on the past and missing those happy times. It also shows how nostalgia can be painful at times, especially when we realize that we can't go back to those moments or be with the people we once loved.
