Silent
The Field Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Headlights tread the highway’s silver lines
Forest lines the road and shrouds the sky
No one, no horizon, and no stars
Just asphalt, trees like cage bars, and the dark
Trails of mist, like ghostly hands
Keep sliding into sight
Reaching out, they beckon me
They lure me into the night
And it feels alright
What led to this path, I cannot say
Cannot quite remember or explain
Am I coming home or running away
Do I even care, is caution in vain?
My throat tightens, ice expands in my chest
The scenery slowly starts closing in
It feels as if I’m in free fall
I’m giving up control
Sucked into the vanishing point
The vertigo takes hold
Yet on I go
It’s not a death wish, really
But the wolves are calling
Silent howls in the night
Something’s about to happen here
And the road is quiet
And the car is purring
Silent howls in the night
Something’s about to happen here
It’s not a death wish, really
But the void is calling
Silent howls in the night
Something’s about to happen here

It's not a death wish really
But the void is calling...

Overall Meaning

The Field’s song Silent is a haunting expression of the inner turmoil and uncertainly that can accompany an individual on their journey through life. The opening lines paint a scene of a desolate road and a forest that seems to trap and isolate the traveler. The mist-like ghostly hands that slide into sight and beckon to the singer reflect a disorientation in the direction of the journey which further adds to the overwhelming atmosphere of uncertainty. The lack of clarity extends further with the singer’s sense of unknown destination and thus, an inability to differentiate between coming home and running away.

The anxiety mounts, but the singer cannot shake the feeling that "something's about to happen". As the vertigo takes hold, and the scenery begins to close in, the singer inexplicably chooses to give up control and is "sucked into the vanishing point". It is here where the wolves start calling, their "silent howls" echoing through the night. The void is calling, and it becomes the only thing that provides any sense of direction. Despite the observer's struggle for control, it is the road that is "quiet" and "purring". This peculiar peace seems to be a welcome relief that is about to transform into something else.

The song ends with the repeated phrase "Something’s about to happen here...Silent howls in the night, Something’s about to happen here, It's not a death wish really, But the void is calling...". The Field masterfully conveys a sense of anticipation, uncertainty, and trepidation that is common to the human condition through the use of simple yet powerful imagery in the lyrics. The song reflects the psychological and emotional journey of the character with remarkable insight.

I'm always on the prowl for new music, but I've found this musician and I haven't cared for anything new to my ears since. This is my favorite artist right now and I could have never predicted it. It's weird how it sinks in, wow.
