The group, formed in New Haven, Connecticut, consisted of leader Fred Parris, Lou Peebles, Stanley Dortch, Ed Martin and Jim Freeman in 1954. With little success, the group reorganized, with Dortch and Peebles leaving, and new member Al Denby entering. The group then recorded "In the Still of the Night", which was originally released as the b-side to the single, "The Jones Girl". The single was released the following year, and "In the Still of the Night" ended up charting at number three on the R&B chart and number 25 on the pop charts. Parris entered the Army soon after, and the group reorganized again, with Martin, Freeman, Tommy Killebrew, Jessie Murphy and new lead Bill Baker. This lineup hit with another highly successful song, Billy Dawn Smith's "To The Aisle".
Upon Parris' return from the Army, a new lineup was assembled, consisting of Parris, Lou Peebles (who was in a previous incarnation of the Five Satins), Sylvester Hopkins, Richie Freeman and Wes Forbes. The group would be briefly known as "Fred Parris and the Scarlets", until the Baker-led group split up. At this point, they reverted to the Five Satins name, but had little success on the charts.
By the early 1970s the group was Parris, Peebles, Richie Freeman, Jimmy Curtis and Corky Rogers, and they continued recording into the 1980s, with Parris, Richie Freeman, Curtis and Nate Marshall. Meanwhile, Bill Baker started his own Five Satins group in 1981, with former Satin Sylvester Hopkins and Hopkins' brothers Carl and Frank. By the late 1980s, this group consisted of Baker, Harvey Potts, Jr., Anthony Hofler and Octavio DeLeon.
Fred Parris continues to perform. Bill Baker died in 1994.
Awards and recognition:
In 2003, the Five Satins were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.
Present day:
One of the original members of the Five Satins now works in the cafeteria at the University of New Haven. Jim Freeman lives in Norwalk, Iowa and owns a pest control company. Wes Forbes is a psychologist in the State of California, currently employed with Alliant International University as a Training Director
Fred Parris passed away in January of 2022.

I bought your version, Dante, when I was 7 yrs. old. I like it better than the Hollywood Argyles. I played it over and over on my kiddie record player until I wore it out!

You are correct that there were three groups with chart hits on this song. Interestingly, Dante & The Evergreens made the No. 1 position in Cash Box magazine, while the Hollywood Argyles became No. 1 on the Billboard charts. In addition, a group called the Dyna-Sores also charted with the song, which was written by Dallas Frazier and was a huge novelty hit in the summer of 1960.

I can't help but believe that Dante's singing style on this track may have influenced the early Bob Dylan. The drawl, pronunciation, the speed, the tone, inflection, it's all there. This version of "Alley Oop" is the best for me. There's a charm, Dante's vocals are unique, the song has a mystique the others simply don't have. Of course, "Time Machine" is also great.
John Ribble
This was always my favorite version-by far!

On this day in 1960 {June 14th} Dante & the Evergreens performed this song on the late Dick Clark's American Bandstand... Two weeks earlier on May 30th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #15 and spent 13 weeks in the Top 100... It was written by Dallas Frazier; who also wrote the Oak Ridge Boys's 1981 hit record "Elvira", which reached #1 on Billboard's Country chart... R.I.P. Mr. Clark...

When I was a kid we had a old Atwater-Kent console radio in the basement and when this song came on I'd turn the volume up loud and the whole cabinet would literally shake on those base notes. The Argyles version wouldn't do that- which is why I like this one better.

It's funny, this is the only version that I remember. Years later, listening to the Hollywood Argyles version, which was the only version played on any oldies station that I ever knew of, just didn't sound right. I surfed to this and I am 10 years old again! I had this single and got into a bad bicycle accident on the way to get the record on my 10th birthday when it was #1 in NY. I haven't heard this version since that time. My copy somehow disappeared from my collection. Thank you for this!

I grew up listening to the Arfyles. I had NO idea anyone else sang it until I sang it at Karaoke and this version came on the screen. I was SOOOOOOOO disappointed! I assumed it was wrong. Luckily, for me, every other time I have sung it, I had the right version. oops. Now, I know better!

This is the version I remember being played back when. but I actually like BOTH Dante & Evergreens & Hollywood Argyles Thumbs Up Thank you for the post

I've been in phone and e-mail contact with Don Drowty, lead singer of Dante & The Evergreens, for several months, and unfortunately, his area has been beseiged by a number of those forest fires that have plagued parts of California recently. His home has been spared so far, but he reports that fires keep coming at him from all directions. Since his music career, Don has dedicated more than 40 years of his life to humanitarian work, including delivering supplies to disadvantaged children.
