Woman On a Train
The Fixx Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Pictures chase across the ceiling
As I try to sleep at night
There's a voice inside my darkness
Laughing at the life I've lost

She's no girl on pills in limbo
She's a woman on a train
With her senses sharpened by the warning cold
She brings me to memory

She flashes her lights, her mission bites
She flashes her lights
Across my desert mind (still no change in me)
(She's) no girl on pills in limbo

She's a woman on a train
She's here...
The woman on a train...
And I will speak no words but the truth for her to hear

Hold her close... but never dare
(She's) no girl on pills in limbo
She's a woman on a train
She's here

The woman on a train...
She will speak for us both
She will speak for us all
'Til I learn to care...

She'll override my best intention
Attack my weak deception

A friend for life and after
I'll never catch her off her guard

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Fixx's song "Woman On a Train" depict a man haunted by images of a woman on a train, who seems to have a profound impact on him. The lines "pictures chase across the ceiling" and "there's a voice inside my darkness" suggest that the singer is grappling with insomnia as a result of these persistent, haunting memories. He speaks of the woman as though she is more than just a memory, but a force to be reckoned with: "with her senses sharpened by the warning cold, she brings me to memory".

The woman on the train seems to hold some kind of power over the singer - her "mission bites" and she "overrides my best intention" - and yet there is also a sense of reverence for her. The singer recognizes that she is not a "girl on pills in limbo", but a woman with a purpose, and he speaks of wanting to hold her close while also acknowledging that he can never fully possess her. He vows to "speak no words but the truth for her to hear", suggesting that there is an honesty and rawness about their connection.

Overall, the lyrics to "Woman On a Train" are somewhat open to interpretation, but they create a vivid and haunting image of a woman who is both difficult to grasp and impossible to forget.

Classic 80's mastery of the genre, The Fixx continues to be one of my faves decade after decade. I love their songs, always making me slide into some mystic dream....from back in the day... ... .. .

Outstanding.............this is one band that has never received the recognition they deeply deserved! One great rock n roll band...........keep the faith FIXX!

All these Fixx songs age so gracefully... they are timeless and in the big picture very underappreciated by many who don't particularly like them.... but they would easily make it into my rock hall of fame................

I would say they don't "like" them because they never heard them before on radio.  They only like what they're force fed by the radio.  I've had people tell me they love this band or that, but the only songs they know of BY that band are those on the radio!  If I played them something by the same band, even from the same era of that band's history, they'd say they don't like it!
A guy that co-wrote one of our songs used to go on and on about how he LOVED The Fixx, but no matter what I played for him of theirs FROM the first 2 or 3 albums, he said he didn't like it!!  Only one song!!  It was either Lost Planes or Cameras In Paris.  That was back in the mid `80's!  I just saw him again a couple months ago and he STILL only likes that one song, but he LOVES The Fixx!!

Like a fine wine....

Oh, for sure., "Woman", "Are We Ourselves?", "Lost Planes", "Reach The Beach", "Secret Separation", "Sunshine In The Shade", "Liner", "Deeper and Deeper", are all in the top 250 of my '1,000 Songs Ultimate Four-Decade playlist. Possible additions "Cameras In Paris", "Built For The Future". And the band is absolutely a lock for the HOF. But, they still haven't inducted Ian Anderson or Jethro Tull, so there's that.

@Shagata Ganai yeah and what about focus! jethro tull was okay, haha! focus was way bigger than rock'n'roll, they played like no rock band could play, it wasn't even fair to rock'n'roll...so there's that, i guess

Just saw the FIXX after 35 years of waiting to catch a show. Hooked at the age of 10 with One Thing Leads to Another ... and now had the opportunity to see them on the Reach the Beach Tour 2018. Incredible Live performance. Truly nostalgic and they can still bring it! Thank you from USA.
