The Flaming Lips are known for their lush, multi-layered arrangements, spacey lyrics and bizarre song titles. They are also acclaimed for their elaborate live shows, which typically feature animal suits, puppets, streamers, video projections and complex stage light configurations.
In 2002, Q magazine named The Flaming Lips one of the "50 Bands to See Before You Die". In 2006, Oklahoma City named a street Flaming Lips Alley in their honor.
The group recorded several albums and EPs for Restless Records in the 1980s and early 1990s. After signing to Warner Brothers, they scored a #9 hit on the Billboard Alternative charts (and #55 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart) in 1994 with "She Don't Use Jelly". Although it would be their only hit single, the band has maintained critical respect and, to a lesser extent, commercial viability with sonically majestic albums such as 1995's Clouds Taste Metallic, 1999's The Soft Bulletin, 2002's Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and 2006's At War with the Mystics. The Flaming Lips' 12th studio album, Embryonic, was released in October of 2009. A complete cover of Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon was released in May 2010. The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends, their collaborative album which features artists like Ke$ha, Bon Iver, Nick Cave and Erykah Badu, was released on Record Store Day, April 2012.
Their next studio album, tentatively titled The Terror, will be released in January 2013.
Their song "Do You Realize??" is the official State Rock Song of Oklahoma.

I'm Not in Love
The Flaming Lips Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
So don't forget it
It's just a silly phase I'm going through
And just because
I call you up
Don't get me wrong, don't think you've got it made
I'm not in love, no no, it's because
But then again
That doesn't mean you mean that much to me
So if I call you
Don't make a fuss
Don't tell your friends about the two of us
I'm not in love, no no, it's because
I keep your picture
Upon the wall
It hides a nasty stain that's lying there
So don't you ask me
To give it back
I know you know it doesn't mean that much to me
I'm not in love, no no, it's because
Ooh you'll wait a long time for me
Ooh you'll wait a long time
Ooh you'll wait a long time for me
Ooh you'll wait a long time
I'm not in love
So don't forget it
It's just a silly phase I'm going through
And just because I call you up
Don't get me wrong, don't think you've got it made
I'm not in love
I'm not in love
The Flaming Lips's song "I'm Not in Love" from their 2017 album "Oczy Mlody" has a deceptively simple and straightforward title that contradicts the complex emotions explored throughout the song. The lyrics describe the singer's attempt to convince both themselves and the person they're addressing that they're not in love, that it's just a silly phase they're going through. Despite making a point to emphasize that they're not in love, it's clear that the singer is struggling with their feelings for this person, and they're unsure how to define or express them. Their interactions are characterized by confusion, hesitation, and uncertainty, with the singer trying to downplay their interest in this person in order to avoid any complications or misunderstandings.
One interpretation of the song is that it's about the fear of vulnerability and the reluctance to admit to oneself and others that they're in love. The singer might be afraid of rejection or of losing control, so they try to maintain a critical distance and avoid any displays of affection that could be misconstrued. They're grappling with the uncertainty and ambiguity of their own feelings, unsure whether they actually love this person or whether they're just caught up in a passing infatuation. The repetition of the line "I'm not in love" seems to be both a reassurance and a denial, as the singer tries to convince themselves that they're not completely consumed by their feelings while also acknowledging that there's something deeper going on.
Another reading of the song is that it's a commentary on the illusions of love and the ways in which we construct and deconstruct romantic narratives. The singer calls attention to the picture on the wall that hides a nasty stain, suggesting that our idealized visions of love often obscure the messy and flawed reality. The chorus ends with the line "It's because", leaving the reason for the singer's feelings open to interpretation. Is it because they're afraid of commitment? Because they're still processing a past relationship? Because they're unsure of their own identity and desires? The song doesn't provide any easy answers, instead leaving us with a sense of unresolved tension and ambiguity.
