The Flaming Lips are known for their lush, multi-layered arrangements, spacey lyrics and bizarre song titles. They are also acclaimed for their elaborate live shows, which typically feature animal suits, puppets, streamers, video projections and complex stage light configurations.
In 2002, Q magazine named The Flaming Lips one of the "50 Bands to See Before You Die". In 2006, Oklahoma City named a street Flaming Lips Alley in their honor.
The group recorded several albums and EPs for Restless Records in the 1980s and early 1990s. After signing to Warner Brothers, they scored a #9 hit on the Billboard Alternative charts (and #55 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart) in 1994 with "She Don't Use Jelly". Although it would be their only hit single, the band has maintained critical respect and, to a lesser extent, commercial viability with sonically majestic albums such as 1995's Clouds Taste Metallic, 1999's The Soft Bulletin, 2002's Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and 2006's At War with the Mystics. The Flaming Lips' 12th studio album, Embryonic, was released in October of 2009. A complete cover of Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon was released in May 2010. The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends, their collaborative album which features artists like Ke$ha, Bon Iver, Nick Cave and Erykah Badu, was released on Record Store Day, April 2012.
Their next studio album, tentatively titled The Terror, will be released in January 2013.
Their song "Do You Realize??" is the official State Rock Song of Oklahoma.

The Flaming Lips Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And I can understand if you still feel sad
It's summertime
And though it's hard to see its true possibilities
When you look inside, all you'll see
When you look inside, all you'll see
Is a self reflected inner sadness
Look outside
It's summertime
The Flaming Lips's song It is a complex blend of emotions that speaks to the listener's innermost feelings. The chorus "It's summertime and I can understand if you still feel sad" perfectly encapsulates the idea that, even in the midst of summer's bright, warm days, it's natural to feel sad or down. The lyrics are telling us that seasonal changes will not always manifest in us the same way as those around us, and that we should recognize that it's okay to feel this way.
The song's message goes even deeper as Wayne Coyne continues to sing about the duality of inner and outer worlds. We see that the listener's inner experience is in great conflict with the beauty of the outside world. Coyne continues to sing that we might find ourselves looking into our own reflective image, where we see our inner sadness lurking beneath the surface. However, he encourages us to continue to look outside, to recognize the beauty of the world around us, and let nature work its magic. This song is ultimately a call to action, reminding us to embrace the present moment and surrender ourselves to the beauty of summertime.

It overtakes me, It overtakes me
It overtakes me... Oh oh oh I
It overtakes me, It Master-Slaves me
It overtakes me... Oh oh oh I
It overtakes me, It overtakes me
It overtakes me... Oh oh oh I
It overtakes me, It Wakes and Bakes me
It overtakes me... Oh oh oh I
You know that it isn't real
You'll disappear in a black hole
You know that it isn't real
Floating out of control.... Oh Wow
It overtakes me, it overtakes me
It overtakes me... Oh oh oh I
It overtakes me, It Master-Slaves me
It overtakes me... Oh oh oh I
And I'm there, looking up at the sky
And I'm scared, thinkin' 'bout the way that I
Don't understand anything at all...
And how it overtakes me... and I am just so small...
Do I stand a chance?
