The Flaming Lips are known for their lush, multi-layered arrangements, spacey lyrics and bizarre song titles. They are also acclaimed for their elaborate live shows, which typically feature animal suits, puppets, streamers, video projections and complex stage light configurations.
In 2002, Q magazine named The Flaming Lips one of the "50 Bands to See Before You Die". In 2006, Oklahoma City named a street Flaming Lips Alley in their honor.
The group recorded several albums and EPs for Restless Records in the 1980s and early 1990s. After signing to Warner Brothers, they scored a #9 hit on the Billboard Alternative charts (and #55 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart) in 1994 with "She Don't Use Jelly". Although it would be their only hit single, the band has maintained critical respect and, to a lesser extent, commercial viability with sonically majestic albums such as 1995's Clouds Taste Metallic, 1999's The Soft Bulletin, 2002's Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and 2006's At War with the Mystics. The Flaming Lips' 12th studio album, Embryonic, was released in October of 2009. A complete cover of Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon was released in May 2010. The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends, their collaborative album which features artists like Ke$ha, Bon Iver, Nick Cave and Erykah Badu, was released on Record Store Day, April 2012.
Their next studio album, tentatively titled The Terror, will be released in January 2013.
Their song "Do You Realize??" is the official State Rock Song of Oklahoma.

("You can turn it up even a little bit more")
It overtakes me
It overtakes me
It overtakes me
Oh
It overtakes me
It master-slaves me
It overtakes me
Oh
It overtakes me
It overtakes me
It overtakes me
Oh
Wah
It overtakes me
It wakes and bakes me
It overtakes me
Oh
(You know that it is unreal)
(You know that it is unreal)
("You'll disappear in a black hole")
(You know that it is unreal)
("Floating out of control")
It overtakes me
It overtakes me
It overtakes me
Oh
Wah
("Yeah!")
It overtakes me
It overtakes me
It overtakes me
Oh
Wah
It overtakes me
It master-slaves me
It overtakes me
Oh
(You know that it is unreal)
(You know that it is unreal)
It overtakes me
It overtakes me
It overtakes me
Oh
Wah
It overtakes me
It wakes and bakes me
It overtakes me
Oh
It overtakes me
It overtakes me
It overtakes me
It overtakes me
It overtakes me
It overtakes me
It overtakes me
Oh
And I'm there
Looking up at the sky
And I'm scared
Thinking 'bout the way that I,
I don't understand
Anything at all
And how it overtakes me
And I'm just so small
Do I stand a chance?
The Flaming Lips's song "It Overtakes Me/The Stars Are So Big...I Am So Small...Do I Stand a Chance?" is a psychedelic, dreamy track that contemplates the nature of the universe and the smallness of human existence. The song is built around a simple but catchy guitar riff and features multiple layers of distorted vocals and sound effects. Lyrically, the song focuses on the overwhelming feeling of being overtaken by something bigger than oneself, be it the universe, a higher power, or one's own emotions or fears. The repetition of the phrase "It overtakes me" throughout the song emphasizes the all-consuming nature of this feeling, while the final line "Do I stand a chance?" conveys a sense of helplessness and uncertainty.
The song's title is a reference to a quote by American astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, who once said that "The universe is in us. When I reflect on that fact, I look up—many people feel small because they’re small and the Universe is big—but I feel big, because my atoms came from those stars." This quote reflects the themes of the song, which explore the relationship between the individual and the cosmos. The song's dreamy, hypnotic soundscapes evoke the feeling of floating through space and contemplating the enormity of the universe, while the repeated refrain of "It overtakes me" suggests a sense of awe and wonder at the vastness of existence.
Overall, "It Overtakes Me/The Stars Are So Big...I Am So Small...Do I Stand a Chance?" is a haunting and introspective song that touches on universal themes of mortality, isolation, and the mysteries of the universe. The lyrics and music combine to create a sense of existential vertigo that is both unsettling and captivating.
