The Flaming Lips are known for their lush, multi-layered arrangements, spacey lyrics and bizarre song titles. They are also acclaimed for their elaborate live shows, which typically feature animal suits, puppets, streamers, video projections and complex stage light configurations.
In 2002, Q magazine named The Flaming Lips one of the "50 Bands to See Before You Die". In 2006, Oklahoma City named a street Flaming Lips Alley in their honor.
The group recorded several albums and EPs for Restless Records in the 1980s and early 1990s. After signing to Warner Brothers, they scored a #9 hit on the Billboard Alternative charts (and #55 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart) in 1994 with "She Don't Use Jelly". Although it would be their only hit single, the band has maintained critical respect and, to a lesser extent, commercial viability with sonically majestic albums such as 1995's Clouds Taste Metallic, 1999's The Soft Bulletin, 2002's Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and 2006's At War with the Mystics. The Flaming Lips' 12th studio album, Embryonic, was released in October of 2009. A complete cover of Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon was released in May 2010. The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends, their collaborative album which features artists like Ke$ha, Bon Iver, Nick Cave and Erykah Badu, was released on Record Store Day, April 2012.
Their next studio album, tentatively titled The Terror, will be released in January 2013.
Their song "Do You Realize??" is the official State Rock Song of Oklahoma.

It Overtakes Me
The Flaming Lips Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It overtakes me, it overtakes me
It overtakes me, oh oh oh I
It overtakes me, It Master-Slaves me
It overtakes me, oh oh oh I
It overtakes me, it overtakes me
It overtakes me, oh oh oh I
It overtakes me, it wakes and bakes me
It overtakes me, oh oh oh I
You know that it isn't real
You know that it isn't real (you'll disappear in a black hole)
You know that it isn't real (floating out of control, oh wow)
It overtakes me, it overtakes me
It overtakes me, oh oh oh I
It overtakes me, it overtakes me
It overtakes me, oh oh oh I
It overtakes me, it Master-Slaves me
It overtakes me, oh oh oh I
You know that it isn't real
You know that it isn't real
It overtakes me, it overtakes me
It overtakes me, oh oh oh I
It overtakes me, it wakes and bakes me
It overtakes me, oh oh oh I
It overtakes me, it overtakes me
It overtakes me
It overtakes me, it overtakes me
It overtakes me
And I'm there, looking up at the sky
And I'm scared, thinkin' 'bout the way that I
Don't understand anything at all
And how it overtakes me, and I am just so small
Do I stand a chance?
The Flaming Lips's song It Overtakes Me can be interpreted as a representation of the feeling of being overwhelmed and overtaken by something unknown or intangible. The repetition of the phrase "it overtakes me" throughout the song emphasizes the sense of being consumed by something larger and beyond one's control. The use of the phrase "Master-Slaves me" reinforces this idea, suggesting that whatever is taking over the singer is exerting complete and total control over them.
The repeated line "You know that it isn't real" could be seen as a reminder to the singer, or perhaps to the listener, that whatever is overtaking them is not actually a tangible threat, but instead a feeling or emotion that they are struggling to cope with. The reference to disappearing in a black hole and floating out of control adds to this sense of being consumed by something unknown and intangible.
The repeated refrain of "overtaking" and "waking and baking" could be interpreted in different ways. It could suggest a feeling of being overwhelmed by one's emotions, or possibly even by drug use. However, without more context it is difficult to say for sure.
Overall, It Overtakes Me is a haunting and repetitive song that captures the feeling of being overtaken by something beyond one's control. The lyrics are open to interpretation, but the sense of being consumed by something unknown and overwhelming is palpable throughout.
