The Flaming Lips are known for their lush, multi-layered arrangements, spacey lyrics and bizarre song titles. They are also acclaimed for their elaborate live shows, which typically feature animal suits, puppets, streamers, video projections and complex stage light configurations.
In 2002, Q magazine named The Flaming Lips one of the "50 Bands to See Before You Die". In 2006, Oklahoma City named a street Flaming Lips Alley in their honor.
The group recorded several albums and EPs for Restless Records in the 1980s and early 1990s. After signing to Warner Brothers, they scored a #9 hit on the Billboard Alternative charts (and #55 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart) in 1994 with "She Don't Use Jelly". Although it would be their only hit single, the band has maintained critical respect and, to a lesser extent, commercial viability with sonically majestic albums such as 1995's Clouds Taste Metallic, 1999's The Soft Bulletin, 2002's Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and 2006's At War with the Mystics. The Flaming Lips' 12th studio album, Embryonic, was released in October of 2009. A complete cover of Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon was released in May 2010. The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends, their collaborative album which features artists like Ke$ha, Bon Iver, Nick Cave and Erykah Badu, was released on Record Store Day, April 2012.
Their next studio album, tentatively titled The Terror, will be released in January 2013.
Their song "Do You Realize??" is the official State Rock Song of Oklahoma.

My Own Planet
The Flaming Lips Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm livin here on the third speck from the sun
I think its about time i own world has begone
A place where my mind has all the color that it needs
A place where my tripy life just belongs to me
I want my own planet
I want my own planet
Cuz this one here is a drag
Ain't talking about no Hitler kind of trip
Just want a place where things can be just as they wish
If you cant dig all these things i have to say
Your gonna blow up this whole planet anyway
And that's why
I want my own planet
The human race i cant stand it
I want my own planet
Cuz this one here is a drag
(solo)
I want my own planet
The human race i cant stand it
I want my own planet
Cuz this one here is a drag
Want my own
I want my own planet
The human race i cant stand it
I want my own planet
Cuz this one here is a drag
The song "My Own Planet" by The Flaming Lips is about the desire to escape from the mundane and unsatisfying world around us and create a place of our own where we can be who we truly are. It speaks to the frustration and alienation that many people feel in modern society, and the urge to find a space where they can be themselves without worrying about the opinions of others.
The lyrics are full of imagery and metaphors that suggest the desire for a new world, a new reality that is more colorful, more exciting, and more fulfilling than the one we currently inhabit. The line "A place where my trippy life just belongs to me" encapsulates this idea, as it speaks to the desire for a world where one's unique perspective and experiences are embraced rather than rejected.
At the same time, the lyrics also suggest a certain pessimism about our current world, and the sense that humanity as a whole is not capable of creating a space that accommodates everyone's needs and desires. Lines like "The human race I can't stand it" and "Your gonna blow up this whole planet anyway" suggest a frustration and disillusionment with the human species and its capacity for destruction and self-destruction.
